Cher The Memoir: Part One – Best Books of 2024 Award Winner

Cher, memoir, book, part one, reading

Cher has long been a figure of immense admiration in the music industry. Her life and career have spanned decades and transcended numerous industries. You might know her from music, movies or even from TV.  She has a voice that is nothing short from gold, timeless fashion sense, and a unique ability to reinvent herself. She is a living legend -but what about the woman behind the persona?

Cher In Her Early Years

Cherilyn Sarkisian, who most the world knows as Cher, was born in May 1946 in El Centro, California. She was raised by a single mother, Georgia Holt, who was  a struggling actress and singer. Due to this, Sarkisian’s childhood had various financial instabilities and constant change. However, her father was mostly absent in her life.
Despite the hardship, Cher’s early experiences in life ultimately set the stage for her extraordinary career. In her memoir, Cher reflects on her relationship with her mother. She acknowledges the tough love, strength and independence she learned from her. She was a dreamer from the start, always believing that she was destined for something bigger in life.

Stardom In Music and Acting

Cher’s rise to stardom was a story of talent, timing, and sheer determination. In the 1960s, after moving to Los Angeles, she began pursuing a career in both music and acting. In both fields she found successful opportunities. It wasn’t long before she caught the attention of music producer Sonny Bono.

Bono would eventually become not only her professional partner but her husband as well. Together, they formed the duo Sonny & Cher, which became a cultural phenomenon in the 1960s. Their hit song “I Got You Babe” catapulted Cher into the spotlight and turned her into a household name. Little did she know how close they would become!

A Dynamic Duo

Also in her memoir, Sarkisian candidly discusses her relationship with Bono. She shares both the highs of their success, as well as the lows of their turbulent marriage. She offers an honest, unfiltered look at the emotional challenges of her rise to fame. As Sonny & Cher became a major entertainment force, Cher also began to establish her own identity away from the duo.

She opens up about her personal challenges, including her divorces, struggles with relationships, and the loss of her mother. She addresses these topics with honesty, emphasizing self-reliance and inner strength. Sarkisian also mentions the importance of believing in yourself, on the easy and harder points in life.

A Legacy of Inspiration

With this only being part one, I myself am excited for part two to be published! This memoir showcases Sarkisian’s unshakeable belief in herself. Despite being doubted and told her career was over, she proved time and again that no obstacle could hold her back! She continued to emerge stronger and more successful with each challenge she faced in life.

Through her music, acting, and personal journey, she shows us the power of staying true to ourselves, no matter the odds. This book goes over many moments in her life that life and those in it around her were not always easy to deal with. She proves we can evolve, define our worth on our own terms, and find strength in both success and failure.

In Conclusion

Cher’s memoir is more than just a book. It is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and authenticity. Her story shows that you can achieve anything through hard work, perseverance, and believing in one’s self. It’s an inspiring reminder for anyone who dreams big and refuses to settle, offering a glimpse into the woman behind the legend.
