2024 GLAAD Awards: Unpacking This Year’s Winners

Some of the most talked about winners this year were The Last of Us (HBO), Heartstopper (Netflix), Red, White, and Royal Blue (Amazon Prime), and Fellow Travelers (Paramount Plus). The Last of Us made headlines back in January for its third episode of season one, entitled “Long, Long Time.” In it, characters Bill and Frank fall in love against all odds in the apocalyptic wasteland. The duo was played by Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, who both received praise for their performances, with Offerman taking home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in the episode.

Heartstopper is a YA comedy-drama based on books of the same name. The series follows teens Charlie and Nick as they navigate their relationship amongst the typical coming-of-age angst that comes with young love. Starring Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney, Sebastian Croft, and Olivia Coleman, Hearstopper was just renewed for its third season by Netflix. The season is expected to debut later this fall.

After the show’s release, Heartstopper was praised for its LGBTQ representation, with Digital Spy calling it, “Heartstopper centers queer love, affirming the feelings of young people watching who might be unsure or afraid to speak their truth,” and Paste Magazine saying, “An open-armed embrace for queer youth, Heartstopper lays the strong foundations of what you can only hope will be the uplifting and inclusive depictions of queer characters for the next generation of viewers”. Other Winners

Red, White, and Royal Blue is a film adaptation of the book by Casey McQuiston. The story follows Henry and Alex, the successor to Britain’s royal throne and the son of the President of the United States, who begin a torrid love affair that transcends “across the pond.” On May 9, 2024, it was announced that there would be a sequel to the hit movie, estimated to be released in the next year or so.

Fellow Travelers, starring Matt Bomer and Jonathon Bailey, is the story of two political staffers who began a forbidden romance during the 1950s. According to Paramount, their romance spans “through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco culture of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s”. Despite it all, the two fight for their love amidst the constant threat of being outed and the struggle for equality. Fellow Travelers was named one of the best shows of 2023 by several media outlets.
