Singer SZA Speaks Out Against \”Galaxy Gas\” Trend

SZA. Kendrick Lamar.

Singer-songwriter SZA is in the news for voicing her concerns about a rising trend. The musician was alarmed that many teenagers now inhale nitrous oxide for fun. SZA, whose real name is Solana Imani Rowe, shared her thoughts on X, formerly Twitter. SZA was also suspicious that the product’s marketing seemed to target children. While a few thought nothing of it, many people seemed to agree with her.

SZA’s Post In Detail

The singer took to her X account to comment on the worrisome trend among black teens. “Sorry to be old n annoying but.. Is no one gonna talk about how galaxy gas came out of no where and is being MASS marketed to black children? the government is doing NOTHING ? .. since when are we selling whip its at the store ???? Somebody protect the children,” SZA demanded. She also posted screenshots of her internet search about the effects of nitrous oxide.

One screenshot revealed that long-term use of the whippits can cause neurological, blood, and mental damage. The article by Yale University also mentioned that galaxy gas or whippits can affect the nerves. Another article the singer included shared that the gas can cause permanent brain damage. It could also lead to the loss of brain cells resulting from hypoxia. Nitrous oxide also cuts the oxygen supply to the brain.

SZA Accuses Galaxy Gas of Targeting Children

The award-winning songwriter also pointed fingers at Galaxy Gas. She said it may have intentionally targeted children with its bright colors. She asked if Galaxy Gas was trying to “entice the kids on purpose.” Galaxy Gas is a firm based in Atlanta that sells whipped cream chargers. The chargers contain nitrous oxide or whippits used in the viral social media “Galaxy Gas challenge.” They are also sold in very colorful containers. The challenge involves taking the gas for recreational purposes. There are thousands of videos online of teenagers participating in the challenge.

Galaxy Gas’ Response to the Social Media Challenge

Galaxy Gas was not originally intended for recreational use. It was designed to make high-quality whipped cream, cocktails, and mousse. The canisters contain nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” which allows it to do this. This gas is also capable of making one high when inhaled. Hence, it has now become associated with getting high or whippit. Whippit is the term used to describe the act of abusing nitrous oxide.

Galaxy Gas is available in retail stores, gas stations, and Amazon. As a result, many health professionals have raised alarm over its accessibility. Meanwhile, the company hasn’t addressed these concerns. However, it noted on its website that the product is to be used solely for food purposes. The statement added that it is illegal for anyone to purchase it for recreational purposes. It also warned against the health hazards of using it as an inhalant.

Nitrous oxide has been around for some time. It is also largely regarded with caution because of its dangers. However, it became popular again with the advent of the viral online challenge. In addition to the risks highlighted in SZA’s post, there are many more. These include dizziness, nausea, lightheadedness, headaches, vomiting, and confusion. According to the Addiction Center, it can also cause impaired motor coordination.

Many celebrities have also been caught in allegations of abusing the product. Kanye West’s former staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, alleged that the rapper was addicted to nitrous oxide. He also accused the rapper’s dentist of getting him the product. Nitrous oxide is also used as a sedative, and Ye allegedly got hooked after a dental procedure. However, the dentist denied the charges.

Conclusion

Galaxy Gas may not have intended for their product to become closely associated with substance abuse. However, it is responsible for examining its supply chains and limiting its accessibility to children. It also needs to evaluate whether its packaging has unintentionally enticed children to abuse the product.
