Beloved Actress Shelley Duvall Sadly Passes Away at Age 75

Shelley Duvall, one of the most iconic actresses of the eighties, sadly passed away at 75. Given that the talented actress built up such a grand reputation over the years, this will undoubtedly be devastating news for many movie fans across the globe.

Duvall lived an impressive life and built a grand career over her decades on the big screen. While she was known best for The Shining, that film was just one of many she contributed to. Off the screen, she was also a dutiful producer and, all around, a wonderful person. Here is a rundown of the contributions of the legendary Shelley Duvall to cinema.

A Tragic Loss

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shelley Duvall has sadly passed away at the age of 75. According to reports, she died in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas, due to complications from diabetes. She is survived by her brothers, Scott, Stewart, and Shane. Duvall was a widely respected actress who starred in and produced many classic titles.

The outpouring of love for her, her work, and her family was immediate and heartfelt. Her husband since 1989, Dan Gilroy, told the press, “My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.” Duvall herself had been dealing with various health concerns for the past few years.

Shelley Duvall: An Icon of Horror

As stated above, Shelley Duvall had an impressive filmography spanning dozens of titles. Most of her earlier and recognizable films were directed by the late and talented Robert Altman, whom she met in 1970. Some of these films include Thieves Like Us, Nashville, and 3 Women, the last of which earned her Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. The two creators became great friends over the years.

One of her more iconic works was Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre. As the title suggests, the show was a series of reenactments of classic fairy tales. It’s a departure from what she’s better known for. Another prominent film role of hers was as Olive in Disney’s live-action Popeye film, a film remembered fondly for its campiness.

By far, her most iconic role was that of Wendy Torrence in the horror classic The Shining. Directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, she brought a level of terror to the role that perfectly captured the sheer isolation and desperation of the film. After her appearance in the 2002 comedy Manna from Heaven, she would return to the big screen two decades later with the horror film The Forrest Hills. It was a humble film that served as her final film role.

A Long Life Story

Outside of her contributions on the silver screen, she had an equally interesting life story. Before meeting Altman, she moved throughout Texas and dreamed of someday becoming a scientist. She has also been an active socialite in Hollywood, working alongside and befriending many other stars. She also began her prolific studio, Think Entertainment, for family productions.

In later years, however, the brilliant actress became more reclusive, especially according to Hollywood standards. Her one outing since then was a controversial interview with Dr. Phil, widely seen as exploitative of her personal struggles. In the years since, she has made a few more appearances, such as an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. As highlighted by her wonderful life, Shelley Duvall will be fondly remembered by movie fans and those who knew her.
