Scott Bloomquist was a race car driver regarded as one of the greatest dirt late-race model car drivers ever. Although born in Iowa, he was primarily raised in California, where he began his career in 1980. Bloomquist was 600 times a dirt late-race champion, giving him an impressive record; he was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002.

Scott Bloomquist also flew planes, although he never officially got licensed. In an episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, he explained, “I’ve never been pulled over yet. I just take off from our place and land in our place.” Scott Bloomquist learned how to pilot planes from his dad, Ron, a retired commercial pilot. “I’ve got an airplane. I’ve got a Piper Cub and then me and him are halves on a Champ [Aeronca Champion], and then he builds World War I airplanes from scratch and flies him off. We got a grass runway,” he shared at the time.

Details of Bloomquist’s Death

Authorities confirmed that Scott Bloomquist died while piloting his plane, but the cause remains unknown. He was the only one on the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration released a statement following the tragic event to announce Bloomquist’s passing. “A single-engine Piper J3 crashed into a barn near Mooresburg, Tennessee, around 7:50 a.m. local time on Friday, August 16,” the statement read. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board will head the investigation and provide updates. Some remains were found in the crashed plane, which authorities believe belonged to Bloomquist. Bloomquist’s death occurred just two months after he survived a near-death experience when he had a rollover car crash at Eldora Speedway in Ohio during one of his races.

The Racing Community Speaks on Bloomquist’s Death

Following news of his passing, friends and members of the racing community have spoken about Scott Bloomquist’s accident. Reid Millard, Bloomquist’s friend, broke the news online. The dirt late-race model car driver shared the news on his Facebook account. “At 7:15 EST this morning Scott was out flying his vintage airplane and had a crash on the Bloomquist family farm. The local fire department and law enforcement are still on the scene,” Millard wrote. He added that he would be with the family in Tennessee as well.

The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame also expressed its devastation at the loss of “one of the most charismatic and immensely talented to ever drive a Dirt Late Model.” The group offered its condolences to Bloomquist’s surviving family, friends, and fans. “This is a tough one for all of us. God Speed,” they added. Several of Scott Bloomquist’s colleagues also expressed sorrow over his tragic death.
