During a clip for his upcoming documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, Prince William recently made a rare and heartfelt comment about his brother, Prince Harry. The rare saying was made after years of public rivalry between the royal siblings that regenerated the focus on their relationship. In the video, William recalls a touching childhood story with Harry involving the late Princess Diana.
A Personal Encounter Opened Their Eyes
The documentary clip is a short fiction story about 42-year-old Prince William. He remembers the day he went to The Passage, a British charity organization for the homeless and vulnerable people. This, William said, was a rude awakening to the harsh realities of homelessness, a stark contrast to the privileged childhood he had experienced.
Being a great example of a philanthropist with a great deal of compassion, Princess Diana tried to educate her sons about the suffering of people with various outlooks on life. She did so by acquainting her sons with people from various backgrounds. Of all William’s visits, this was also one of the most influential and educational. It served to bring him out of the royal bubble and make him realize that not everyone lives as comfortably as he had been used to.
He recalls how Diana could always put everyone at ease and joke around or tell many jokes to the people present at the shelter. William expected the environment to be dark and grumpy. However, it turned out to be rather warm and happy. Here, William and Princess Harry could talk to people who faced much tougher problems than they ever did themselves and play a game of chess. This helped William realize the fact that there was life outside the sordid, luxurious life of the palace every day.
Prince William’s Insight Gained with Loved Ones
Looking back at the visit, Prince William stated that it helped him to see more beyond what life gives at first at a young age. He said this is because, at that time, he only had a small vision of life and forms of livelihood apart from his environment. But it was the homeless people he met on the way who gave him ideas he had never thought about before and showed him the difference between knowing and understanding the latter’s value.
This reflection is one of the few times William has spoken about his brother Harry in public since the two brothers fell out. The royal family has not been on good terms since Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, decided to move down from their status in royal duties and find a new, peaceful life in America at the beginning of 2020. The above-mentioned lesson learned early in his career has continued to inform his work on social issues, especially the homeless in society.
