Pete Davidson Checks Into Private Facility For Mental Health

Former Saturday Night Live performer Pete Davidson attending a movie premiere.

Saturday Night Live alumnus Pete Davidson has decided to check into a mental healthcare facility in the middle of a tour. The comedian has not made any statement yet as to what may have led him to this decision, but many attribute it to his awkward and unorthodox lifestyle, his lengthy tour schedules, and general decline in popularity as his career veers further from his SNL days. Though it is all speculation, his often-opaque attitude toward himself often doesn’t lend itself to friendly assumptions.

What Happened to Pete Davidson?

This top-trending search says more about Pete than just this most recent bout with his mental wellbeing. Many of the results are about a seemingly troubled past riddled with speculated substance abuse, love-life drama, and several altercations with other celebrities. These details may lead some to form a narrative about Mr. Davidson, and while a few may be unfair, some are not unfounded. Many have taken to social media to draw a comparison between Pete and other celebrities that have had their own mental health problems. This seems to possibly underline a root cause of Davidson’s need for help: fame.

Fame seems to poison some people’s perception of themselves and may exasperate already significant mental disorders or conditions. Famously, ex-of-an-ex to Davidson, Kanye West, the ex-husband of Kim Kardashian, has openly discussed this correlation with fellow rappers and other celebrities. Other cases, such as the situation with Brittany Spears, seem to further highlight such a relationship between fame and an increased risk of mental health episodes. It is also a common occurrence that personal tragedies, such as the death of a family member, may cause people who suffer them to be more at risk of experiencing mental breakdowns.

His Father’s Memory May Still Haunt Him

Pete Davidson’s father passed away in the September 11th, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. While it would take a mental healthcare professional to reach this conclusion, one cannot help speculating that the absence of a father figure, especially one caused by tragic circumstances like these, may have left Davidson with a propensity for outbursts and a deeper need for help.

Davidson does not shy away from the topic of his father; he has frequently incorporated the tragedy into his own career, including talking about it on stage and using it as both a setup and a punchline in many jokes. This may be a clue toward the true nature of his pain: in most cases, artists will use their struggles as a sort of muse, driving them forward in their search for a voice. This is supported through Davidson’s film project, The King of Staten Island, in which the protagonist, portrayed by himself, becomes a fireman after a life of burnout grifting because the character’s father also died in a similar fashion to Davidson’s father.

Pete Davidson is Appreciated and Celebrated

Though his upbringing and personal life may have been darker than average, he has defied the statistics and risen to become a household name among “that guy actors”, along the likes of Tim Blake Nelson and Zachary Levi. Though saddened that such a talented young man would need to seek mental help, many are happy to hear that he is taking care of himself, especially at a time that he needs it most.

Davidson brightens up the world through his unique wit and charm that he easily converts into laughter through his mastery of the stand-up craft. On screen, Davidson has also made quite the splash and waves in his depictions of larger-than life characters, such as the transformer Mirage in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. He has also had a presence in the video-game world, making an appearance in the Gamestop mockumentary Dumb Money.

The world truly seems to love Pete, despite an initial dip in popularity following his departure from SNL. It’s good to hear that he’s seeking help for mental health issues from healthcare professionals and that his fans and friends are also showing support for him. Good luck, Mr. Davidson.
