The 63-year-old Neil Gaiman is best known as an English writer whose work, such as the best-selling The Sandman, Good Omens, and American Gods, has been adapted for film, TV, and the stage. His name is now sparking controversy due to the allegations of two sexual assaults and he is now the subject of a police complaint in New Zealand. What happened? And who are the victims in question? Gaiman denies the allegations but who is telling the truth?
Neil Gaiman’s Sexual Assault Allegations

As per Tortoise Media, who made a four-part podcast on the allegations and investigations surrounding it, The incidents involve two young women who came into contact with Neil Gaiman. Additionally, they occurred in the span of two decades. The first woman goes by the name of Scarlett, 23, who worked as a nanny for Gaiman, and the other goes by K, 18, who met the author at a book signing.
Scarlett recounts that yes, she was in a consensual relationship with Neil Gaiman, but some things happened that were far from consensual. The sexual assault took place in February 2022 in a bath at his New Zealand residence, where she did her nanny work. She alleges that Gaiman engaged in rough and degrading acts with her that she didn’t consent to, and there are messages, notes, and friends who support her allegations.
As for K, who was 18 at the time of the assault in 2003, she met Neil Gaiman at a book signing in Sarasota, Florida. She got into a romantic relationship with him when she was 20, while he was in his mid-40s. She alleges that, like Scarlett, she engaged in rough and painful acts that “she neither wanted nor enjoyed.” In one incident, she claims that Gaiman engaged with her in an act despite expressing that she didn’t want to as she was suffering from a painful infection.
His Take on the Sexual Assault Allegations
Neil Gaiman denies both allegations made against him. He maintains that with Scarlett, everything that took place was consensual. As for K, he is disturbed by her allegations and he denies that anything nonconsensual has occurred. He firmly believes that K’s allegations are purely based on her regret over their relationship. As for Scarlett, he believes that she had a condition associated with false memories during her relationship with him. That claim, however, is not supported by Scarlett’s medical records and history.
The New Zealand Police Stepping Up
When the complaint was made in 2022, the police made it their mission to “speak to key people as part of this investigation,” and their efforts to do so are still ongoing. Furthermore, they declined Neil Gaiman’s offer to help in the investigation, which the author believes is reflective of a lack of evidence and substance. The police are also claiming that there are “a number of factors to take into consideration with this case including location of all parties.”
However, with the investigation still taking place, there isn’t enough evidence against Neil Gaiman. In addition, the WhatsApp messages that were displayed by Tortoise Media actually support that he had sought consent before engaging in any act. All this makes one wonder whether the allegations are true after all or not… only the police can be the judge of that after they do their due diligence.
