Moo Deng the Pygmy Hippopotamus has captured the hearts and minds of the world internationally. Although she lives in Thailand, she is a household name across the globe. As one of the cutest viral sensations in recent time, many people love the little hippo. In a complicated world, the tiny hippo is a sweet, innocent ball of happiness. She is also an important reminder about the conservation of her species and animals in general. Learn all about the pygmy hippo below!
Little Moo Deng
Two-month-old Moo Deng joined the world on July 10th and has been blessing our screens since she was revealed later on in July. She lives in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. Her name means “bouncy pig” or “pork patty when translated from Thai to English. Moo Deng is delightfully dramatic and very open about her feelings. She has dramatic expressions for everything, including being slapped by a monkey.
The tiny pigmy hippo has her own Wikipedia page, and the Thai Embassy in Japan openly embraced her. In addition, she is quite the inspiration. Her little chubby cheeks have inspired Thai Sephora makeup looks, and a cafe is launching a cookie that has the shape of little Moo Deng. If they made that international, the sales would be incredible. Who wouldn’t want a baby hippo cookie?
Pygmy Hippopotamus’s Today

There are only an estimate of 2,000 pygmy hippopotamus’s alive in the West African wild today. They are half as tall as their bigger relatives and weigh about one-fourth of the regular-sized hippos. Although Moo Deng was born at about 10-14 pounds, she will likely grow to be 500 pounds and around two feet as an adult.
The greatest threat to the pygmy’s living in the wild is deforestation. Also, due to their size, they are easier to hunt and more palatable than their larger relatives. Being sold for bushmeat is one of the biggest issues these mini hippos are facing. There’s a limited understanding of this particular species of hippopotamus because of how few there are. Their affinity for isolation and nighttime also makes it harder for researchers to get to know them. Most of what we know today is based on the behavior of captive hippos like the celebrity pygmy.
However, Moo Deng and her three siblings, Moo Tun (stewed pork), Pha Lor (pork belly stew), and Moo Wan (sweet pork), are not safe. Recently, overeager zoo visitors have been throwing things into their enclosure like shellfish and bananas to allegedly catch the baby hippo’s attention. One person splashed her with water while she was sleeping. The zoo has amped up their security and is threatening legal action with overzealous viewers. This little international treasure must be kept safe. Pygmy hippopotamus’s go through enough as it is.
Conclusion
In conclusion, little Moo Deng is simply the cutest little pygmy hippo. She is a perfect bundle of happiness that brings joy to so many people. She also brings critical awareness about her species going extinct. The little “bouncy pig” is a sign that the species is being kept alive and even possibly growing due to conservation efforts. Catch a glimpse of Moo Deng on livestream once it’s set up in the upcoming days. The pygmy hippo will be available for people around the world to get even more of her cuteness. That’s something we all need.
