Frankie Beverly’s Impact On Music
Frankie Beverly was a legend in the music industry and the black community. He started singing in his local church choir before forming his first band, The Blenders. The band was short-lived, and Beverly founded another group, the Butlers, after high school. The group met Martin Gaye in the 1970s, and he convinced Beverly to change their name. Thus, Maze was born. After the name change, Maze released nine gold albums between 1977 and 1993. Their hit releases include “Before I Let Go,” “Joy and Pain,” “Happy Feelings,” “Southern Girl,” and “We Are One.”
Released in 1981, “Before I Let Go” tells of Beverly’s struggle with love and remains the group’s most impactful hit. Beyoncé covered the song in 2019, and it is a staple in black gatherings. “There isn’t a cookout, not a wedding or family reunion in Black America where you won’t hear [Maze],” Essence Magazine wrote. In The Philadelphia Tribune, Dyana Williams, radio legend at WDAS 105.3 FM, said of Beverly’s music: “[It] has had an enormous impact, specifically on Black culture and global culture. It’s as simple as that.”
Frankie Beverly Was Honored For His Music
Frankie Beverly was born in Philadelphia. The songwriter and producer attended Germantown High School, where he formed his first band. In May 2024, Philadelphia honored the legend by renaming the street of his childhood home, the 6000 block of Norwood Street in Germantown, to “Frankie Beverly Way.” “Frankie Beverly has given so much to our city, our culture, and the music scene,” City Council member Cindy Bass said. “We just want to be here and say thanks…. We love and appreciate you.”
Beverly Frankie received the timely gift with gratitude. Several friends, family, fellow musicians, and dignitaries had gathered to honor him. According to The Philadelphia Tribune, he told everyone gathered in his acceptance speech, “I want to thank you all for coming along on this journey. Today is not a sign of a closing chapter but a new beginning. There is more to come.” Shortly before Frankie Beverly’s death, Maze wrapped up their farewell tour after five decades in June. The final tour took place in Philadelphia.
