Marlon Wayans recently spilled details on why his family had to leave the popular sketch comedy show In Living Color. Created by Keenan Ivory Wayans, it brought all of the Wayans siblings into the leading scene. They included Marlon Wayans, Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans, and Shawn Wayans. Off-set drama with Fox executives made them walk in Season 4, which Marlon Wayans just candidly spoke about in an interview with Club Shay Shay
Keenan Ivory Wayans and the Wayans’ Departure
The Wayans family united for principle over profit, as Jamie Fox started putting In Living Color into syndication, and this affected Keenan. Marlon Wayans said his brother was losing a lot of money, the reason why as a family, they had to group and walk away from the TV series. The 1992 Christmas episode was their statement. The cast wore shades and just stood behind Keenan without speaking; nobody engaged in the Christmas celebration.
Even when the show was going well, Season 5 just wasn’t that magical and lost its appeal without the Wayans family as the season was becoming forgettable. Marlon Wayans gave special thanks to Chris Rock for his intervention, though Chris Rock couldn’t salvage the exit of the Wayans in his words, “That’s why season five, it got weird. It got Biz Markie. God bless Chris Rock, he came at the wrong time. As brilliant as he is, he couldn’t save it. Because the eyes of the show are gone.”
Marlon Wayans on In Living Color’s Legacy
What would be most disappointing to Marlon Wayans is that In Living Color didn’t last anywhere near as long as Saturday Night Live. He said, “Well, if Jamie Fox was never an issue, the show would still be strong and there would have been many, many more seasons of In Living Color. It was supposed to have been according to Marlon Wayans one cultural hallmark of television, but because Keenan and the network couldn’t resolve their controversies, it just got cut short.
Final Thoughts
Indeed, the most interesting moments in Marlon Wayans’ thoughts about In Living Color concern creative control and fair compensation. His family, the Wayans sadly left the show with him out of solidarity for Keenan.
A revealing gesture displaying the affinity of their bonds of kinship but even more compelling is how well Marlon Wayans’s frustration shows just how much potential he felt In Living Color had as a show. In his view, In Living Color could have had a legacy as influential and long-lasting as any major comedy series. However, the unexpected exit of the Wanans family took with it, part of the In Living Color charm.
