Renowned NBA superstar Magic Johnson has responded to Anthony Edwards’ comments about Michael Jordan. Recall that Anthony Edwards made controversial remarks about the lack of talent in the older generation. Johnson dismissed Edwards’ statement and asked him to gain credentials that would qualify him. However, the basketball legend didn’t show animosity to the younger player in his response.
Anthony Edwards’ Controversial Statement
Anthony Edwards made a bold statement in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on August 20. The basketball player was answering a question about how playing basketball now differed from the past. Edwards admitted that he didn’t watch basketball when the older generations played. Therefore, he couldn’t say much about it. However, he went on to share his opinion about the players.
“They say it was tougher back then than it is now, but I don’t think anybody had skill back then,” Edward noted. “[Michael Jordan] was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean? So that’s why when they saw Kobe [Bryant], they were like, ‘Oh, my God.’ But now everybody has skill.”
That wasn’t the first time Edwards made bold and controversial remarks. The Minnesota Timberwolves star had previously referred to himself as “the No. 1 option” on the national team squad. The USA squad features talented players such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant. However, those comments could be considered as Edwards joking around, as he was evidently starstruck at being surrounded by such great players during the Olympics.
Magic Johnson Responds To Anthony Edwards
Edwards’ remarks didn’t sit well with many people, including former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson. He disputed that Michael Jordan was the only skilled basketball player among the older generation. ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith asked Johnson to respond to Edwards’ statement during a speaking engagement. “Anthony Edwards just said the other day that there really weren’t any skilled players in the NBA back in the day outside of Michael Jordan. That’s what he said. “Your response to that, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson?” Smith pressed.
Reacting to the question, Magic Johnson asked Edwards to focus on building his portfolio. “Well, you know, I don’t never respond to a guy that’s never won a championship,” Magic Johnson said. “I’ve got nothing to say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t even know if he won a high school championship,” Magic Johnson stated. However, Edwards won a state title in Georgia with Atlanta’s Holy Spirit Preparatory in 2018. At the Paris Olympics, he also won a gold medal with the U.S. team.
Magic Johnson’s Wins
Magic Johnson’s victories speak to his skill and talent. At 23, the former NBA champion was already flying high. Johnson won a state title in Michigan with Everett High in 1977 and revolutionized the point guard position. In 1980 and 1982, he won two NBA titles with the Showtime Lakers. Johnson also won gold in 1992 at the Barcelona Olympic Games. This contradicts Edwards’ statement that only Kobe Bryant won a championship at a young age.
During his career, Magic Johnson was a five-time champion, three-time Finals MVP, and 12-time All-Star. The Los Angeles Lakers icon was a three-time regular-season MVP, winning NCAA and Olympic gold medals. Additionally, he averaged 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 11.2 assists, totaling more than 10,000 assists. Therefore, he is more than qualified to speak on Edward’s assertions about the older generation.
