Sad news for fans of Kelly Hyland from Dance Moms, who has informed the public that she’s battling breast cancer right now. Hyland is currently staying in Pittsburgh, where she is undergoing chemotherapy treatments. In talking about her health battle, she makes it clear that her Dance Moms co-stars have been supportive.
“I booked myself a mammogram,” Hyland said, according to People. “I had just had one done eight months prior and the results came back clean. However, this new mammogram and sonogram did not, it came back showing a mass.
“I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months,” Hyland said. “I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”
Kelly Hyland is working hard to keep her life as normal as possible. She continues to record her podcasts Dear Dance Mom… and Back from the Barre. When she told her kids about her cancer diagnosis, Hyland was in Florida. Her three kids, though, were in Pittsburgh.
“I would’ve liked to have told them in person, but a phone call was the best I could do given the circumstances,” she said. “I did a four-way call with all of my kids because I wanted to tell them at the same time and make sure they were all given the same information.” Brooke, Paige, and Josh were all born from her marriage to Randy Hyland.
Kelly Hyland Of ‘Dance Moms’ Didn’t Notice Symptoms
For Kelly Hyland, she didn’t immediately notice her symptoms. Yet she was quite aware about her weight loss. It was something she was concerned about, of course. Yet she couldn’t connect it with breast cancer at all. She’s still in the middle of a number of treatments. And how will it all work out for her? Time will tell.
“The toughest part for me has been accepting help from the people around me,” Hyland said. “I am a very independent person and, as a mom, I’m used to being the one taking care of people, not the one being taken care of.”
Yet Kelly Hyland doesn’t want to be a problem for other people to take care of in their lives. “I hate feeling like I am inconveniencing anyone or being a burden in anyway,” she said. “However, I am quickly learning I am on a very long and tough road, so I am going to need to learn to accept people’s help because I am very lucky to have people that want to take care of me during this time.”
Hyland’s daughters were members of the Abby Lee Dance Team for a number of years. Dance Moms originally aired on Lifetime between 2011 and 2019. The show happened to be a springboard for cast members’ careers. Among them were JoJo Siwa, Maddie Ziegler, and Chloe Lukasiak.
The show followed these dancers’ involvement with Miller, who was their coach. Viewers watched these children from Kelly Hyland and other mothers go through some strenuous testing. Miller used her “pyramid” plan to grade how well her students were doing.
Over the years, there has been some criticism aimed at Miller for her coaching tactics. Siwa, though, has been a staunch defendant of Miller over the years. Earlier in May 2024, a special featuring some Dance Moms aired. Miller, though, was not present. This was a request from some cast members who wanted to appear without their coach.
A source reached out to People and added some insight to Miller’s disappearance. “At this point, everyone has gone through different eras, had time to reflect and there’s been a lot that Abby put them through emotionally and physically and they just didn’t want to relive that,” according to this source.
