Fans have been skeptical about Gerry Turner since we first met him on the first season of the “Golden Bachelor.” Any man who talks that softly and blinks that slowly is off-putting at best. He leaves everyone but his soon-to-be ex-wife, Theresa Nist, feeling uncomfy (thanks for that turn of phrase, Chelsea, from Love is Blind!).
Most people perceive people lucky enough to find love in their golden years as quick to marry and create a life together. Of course, most people are not Gerry Turner. Instead, he prefers to run to the lawyer for a divorce three months later.
Maybe we, as the fanbase, had too much hope for what was hyped to be the most wholesome season of The Bachelor. There was an expectation that the “golden” season would not deliver.
Who is the Golden Bachelor?
America wanted to love the Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner, as soon as they met him. The 71-year-old was painted as a widower of several years, taking a second chance at love with the help of his devoted daughter, who was rooting for him.
Bachelor fans tuned in, with the series raking in nine million views in the first week. Those are the highest numbers the franchise has gotten since the finale of Peter Weber’s season in March of 2020, when we were all in lockdown.
Gerry Turner melted our hearts by talking about how different it was to find love in his 70s versus when he tied the knot with his high school sweetheart much earlier in his life. He’s so perfect that it nearly crushed us all when we got the first signs that all was not as it seemed.
Gerry Turner Isn’t So Golden
Fans saw their first red flag when an alleged prior fling came out of the woodwork to dish on the not-so-golden boy with The Hollywood Reporter. In the THR report, the woman painted a less rosy picture of America’s favorite grandfather figure.
The woman alleged that Gerry Turner was less than honest about his work history, which, at 71, felt like less of an issue. It’s a sort of light red flag if you will. However, her statements about him getting busy just weeks after his wife’s death (and ever since) killed the innocent older gentleman vibe. The nail was in the coffin of his reputation, so to speak.
The Golden Bachelor is Heading to Divorce Court
In one of the most awkward interviews on TV since OJ Simpson talked “hypothetically” about what may have happened that night, the couple came forward to discuss their shocking divorce on GMA.
Whether it’s distance, family obligations, or money trouble, as some rumors suggest, the couple is parting ways.
Those are things most people would think are easy to overcome, especially when you’re fortunate enough to find love in your older years. But maybe we just give older people too much grace. Who really has their life truly figured out? Not Gerry Turner, that’s who.
The prenup the couple has in place should make the logistics of divorce easy, but it doesn’t help soothe America’s aching heart. How could the Golden Couple hurt us like this?
