The world of film, television, and entertainment as a whole has suffered a great loss. Martin Mull, the legendary comedian, actor, and artist, has passed away at the age of 80. Mull, known for his distinctive voice and whose career has spanned multiple decades, is best known in recent memory for his roles on both the big and small screens.
Late Legendary Entertainer Martin Mull’s Famous Roles
As mentioned previously, the late legendary entertainer rose to prominence initially as an artist and as a comedian. Before his prolific acting career, he released up to five albums featuring a combination of music and his comedic stylings including Days of Wine and Neuroses in 1975 and Near Perfect/Perfect in 1979. Mull’s first big break came after a meeting with Norman Lear when he was cast as twins Barth and Garth Gimble in the sitcom Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, a series that regularly lampooned soap operas.
He would go on to reprise his role as Garth Gimble in the Mary Hartman spinoff Fernwood 2 Night, a talk show parody series that featured many other late comedy talent. Comedy greats Fred Willard and Daytime Emmy award-winning Ernest actor Jim Varney appeared on the variety series during its run. Mull would go on to also play Colonel Mustard in the comedic whodunit Clue in 1985.
Mull’s most iconic roles were in the 1990s era of his career. In Roseanne, he portrayed Leon Carp, the manager of the title character, while she worked at Rodbell’s Luncheonette. He was also the romantic partner of Scott. In a nod to his early comedy roots, Scott was played by Mull’s former Fernwood co-star Fred Willard.
He is also known for his string of recurring characters on the small screen. The Chicago native went on to play the straight-laced disciplinarian of Westbridge High, principal Willard Kraft, in the sitcom Sabrina, the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart. The artist-turned-actor also played Gene Parmesan, a private investigator who works closely with the Bluth family matriarch Lucille, in Arrested Development. Mull also had a lesser-known career in voice acting with one of his most regarded and final roles being the devious Vlad Masters, AKA Vlad Plasimus, in the animated Nickelodeon series Danny Phantom.
