Former American Idol contestant, Caleb Kennedy, pleaded guilty to his involvement in a fatal car crash. The incident occurred in South Carolina in 2022 and resulted in the tragic death of Larry Duane Parris, who was 54 years old. By pleading guilty, Kennedy admitted he committed the felony charge of driving under the influence, causing Parris’ death. 

Guity Conviction

Initially, the 20-year-old faced a 25-year sentence and a fine of $25,100. However, his sentence was later lowered to eight years in prison and a fine of 15,100. Additionally, Kennedy was given probation of five years, involuntary and random drug tests, and mandatory mental health counseling. What’s more? Three years of his prison sentence will be served under home detention. Notably, Ryan Beasley, Kennedy’s attorney, emphasized his client’s guilt and remorse and extended sympathies to the Parris family for their loss. Moreover, Beasley highlighted Kennedy’s being a minor when the incident happened and his lack of criminal records.

The Greenville News revealed that Kennedy had previous warrants from being under the influence of marijuana. This is due to the drug being found in his system at the time of the fatal car crash. Furthermore, he stated he was driving to his girlfriend’s house. In discussing the events before the car crash, Kennedy said he lost control of his Ford pickup truck, subsequently colliding into a garage, which unfortunately had Parris inside. Sadly, Parris wouldn’t survive as he was pronounced dead at the hospital three hours later. In a statement by the case prosecutor, solicitor Barry J. Barnette, he highlights the public concerns surrounding vape pens and their potential risks.

Responding to the sentencing, Beasley issued a statement addressing his clients’ remorse in Parris’ death. He also expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, by taking full accountability for the car crash. Lastly, Kennedy hoped for healing and recovery for every affected party of the tragedy. Originally, Caleb Kennedy rose to fame at the start of 2021 during his time on American Idol’s 19th season. Notably, his talent and potential led him to the final five contestants, however, his time on the show was cut short due to social media controversy.

In a resurfaced video, Kennedy is seen wearing a good resembling a Ku Klux Klan robe in many people’s eyes, leading to intense backlash. As a result, he decided to announce his exit from the show on Instagram. In his post, Kennedy discussed and took responsibility for the actions he displayed in the video. Although his actions were taken out of context, he still expressed remorse for his past behavior. Finally, he mentioned that his youth and ignorance weren’t valid excuses for causing the car crash. Alongside the apology to the family, Kennedy expressed regret and apologized to his fans, acknowledging their hurt and disappointment, and his aim to regain their trust.

Kennedy’s short-lived run on American Idol started with his audition, where he performed his original song, Nowhere. Not only did this song catch the audience’s ears, but the judges’ attention with popular singer, Katy Perry, encouraged him to finish the song due to its potential. Throughout the competition, Kennedy won over the viewers and judges as his songs uniquely blended traditional country influences with contemporary storytelling. 

Despite his abrupt exit from the show, Kennedy remained focused on songwriting, using his experiences as a muse for his music. In fact, his creative process involved storytelling in his songs to invoke emotions, such as his post-American Idol songs, which incorporated themes of growth and self-reflection. He performed at various events and venues across the Southeastern United States, including his hometown, Spartanburg, for their Music on Main series., his set lists were mostly covers and original songs that reflected his southern rock and country influences.
