Reese Witherspoon shared an update on Big Little Lies with fans on Saturday, October 5. Witherspoon’s update comes nearly a year after co-star Nicole Kidman hinted at a third season. The Legally Blonde star revealed that the third installment of the hit series is in the works. Additionally, she and her co-stars can’t wait to get back together to start working.
Reese Witherspoon Confirms 3rd Season for Big Little Lies
Reese Witherspoon was at the Hello Sunshine red carpet on Saturday. She told E! News about Big Little Lies, saying, “Nicole and I have been waiting. We’re waiting for Leanne Moriarty. She’s going to be turning in something very soon, Witherspoon revealed. “We’re back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters. It’s exciting, too, because I think the kids are probably a little bit older now, so that might add another element. I don’t know yet, I haven’t read it yet.”
Big Little Lies is a fan-favorite series based on author Leanne Moriarty’s 2014 novel. The first season earned 16 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations and won eight. Although initially billed as a limited series, it returned for a second season. Fans have long called for a third season, especially given how the second season ended.
Nicole Kidman Admits Announcement Was Too Early
Nicole Kidman has shared several updates with fans about Big Little Lies for a couple of months. On Nov. 17, 2023, Kidman announced that there would be a third installment. She revealed this at a Ladies Professional Golf Association Q&A in Naples, Florida. The actress told the audience that doing the show with Reese Witherspoon stopped her from retiring after having children. In a March 2024 interview with Elle, she revealed that her daughter Sunday was partly responsible for Big Little Lies getting a third season.
Sunday told Kidman that her character needed a third season of Big Little Lies to cope. However, Kidman has since acknowledged that she dropped the ball too early. She told Vanity Fair in an interview with Reese Witherspoon that she got “excited.” Kidman then reprimanded herself for keeping quiet, citing the science behind it. The Perfect Couple star mentioned that discussing what one has not done supplies a dopamine hit. Therefore, she shouldn’t talk about it to not feel like she has done it.
Zoe Kravitz Didn’t Expect a Third Season
Despite Kidman’s resolve, her excitement still got the best of her, and she shared updates over time. She told the outlet that the author was delivering the novel and the production was in progress. The actress further revealed in January that she and Reese Witherspoon texted about Big Little Lies season three daily. Meanwhile, their co-star, Zoe Kravitz, had ruled out the show’s third season in 2023. Kravitz opined that the show wouldn’t continue after director Jean-Marc Vallée’s death.
In 2021, Vallée died from a fatal cardiac arrhythmia. He directed the first season of the award-winning series. During a GQ TikTok Live session, Kravitz said she couldn’t “imagine going on without him.” Kravitz also noted that Big Little Lies got its direction from Vallée, so “unfortunately, it [was] done.” She added that she didn’t think it would return despite the cast discussing it a lot.
Conclusion
Reese Witherspoon’s update offers hope to the series’ fans who have clamored for a third season. Hopefully, production will commence soon, and the fans and cast can get another shot at their beloved show. There is no doubt that the excitement will be too great when the new season premieres.
