Following the release of her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, Cardi B’s stardom would increase even more as the album received critical acclaim. What’s more? The album would not only become the first women’s hip hop album nominated for the Grammy’s Best Album of the Year award in 25 years, but it also gave Cardi B two Grammy wins for both Best Rap Song and Performance for her song, Bodak Yellow.
Speculation Around Cardi B’s Seven-Year Hiatus
Still, it’s been seven years since Invasion of Privacy was released and there hasn’t been a follow-up album since. Despite the long hiatus between albums, Cardi B has found success with hit singles and collaborations with other popular women rappers specifically. Although she’s still maintained relevancy, fans and critics alike continue to anticipate her second album.
At the top of the list of people who await Cardi B’s next album is popular media personality Joe Budden who’s had a lot of criticism, as well as praise, against her. From his perspective on why she hasn’t released another album, he believes either a lack of work ethic or a fear of the “sophomore slump” is behind her hiatus. Whether Cardi B is a victim of either of the two speculations is unfounded, and according to the rapper herself, is untrue.
Tensions Arise Between Cardi B and Joe Budden
Responding to Budden’s claims, Cardi B would respond on her social media by addressing his issues with her album rollout head-on. In her rant, she would hit back by questioning his intentions around his criticisms against her as she believed he was trying to tear her down on purpose.
Furthermore, she would call him out for his alleged false support of wanting to hear new music, stating that Budden could have pulled up to her studio to hear it personally. Instead, she believes that he wants to tear her down and that his support is only a disguise for his hate for her.
Additionally, Cardi B would make accusations of giving him a lap dance and cocaine abuse issues that Budden would later deny. Along with denying her allegations, he promised to never speak on her again on his podcast in a series of tweets. Alternatively, he would also state that he still had love for her despite her scathing rants against him.
Following her rant, she would also go on X to send a sweet message to her fans expressing gratitude for their continuous support, while acknowledging her role regarding the criticisms made against her. In addition to her fan appreciation posts, she promised to release her new album sometime this year to further stop the claims against her that she wasn’t ever going to drop a new album.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that the rapper and former rapper-turned-media podcaster would be at odds with each other. Over the years, Budden has said other things that would get under Cardi B’s skin, such as commenting on her issues with rapper Nicki Minaj, her relationship with husband Offset, and other scandals that involved her.
However, considering her lengthy hiatus and behavior on social media, Budden’s criticisms may not be entirely unreasonable. Furthermore, Joe Budden isn’t the only person criticizing her work ethic or behavior, but is, by far, the most popular. Whether or not he is sincere in his criticism against the rapper may be debatable among both of their fanbases, but to Cardi B, his intentions aren’t as pure as he says it is.
