Cardi B Defends Tyla After VMAs Debacle

Cardi B for New York Fashion Week

On September 16th, Cardi B opened a X/Twitter space to discuss her album, but she also defended South African singer and songwriter Tyla from the backlash the latter received following this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). Tyla, who recently won her first VMA, faced much online disapproval and hate due to certain actions she took and statements she made at the VMAs. In particular, many African-American watchers were not happy that Tyla refused to self-identify as Black, instead using the term Coloured, which is more common and accurate in her native South Africa.

Tyla won her first VMA for Best Afrobeats at this year’s ceremony; however, the immediate hate she received online quickly stole the spotlight from her big moment. The singer got up on stage to accept her award, realized it was too heavy for her, and politely asked for help, though she appeared to give an annoyed look to Halle Bailey. Tyla made headlines and started trending on Twitter that night, with some fans interpreting her interaction with Bailey as Tyla seeing Bailey as nothing but a worker. Several people accused Tyla of being uppity.

Cardi B Comes To Tyla’s Defense

Although Tyla and Bailey already tried to smooth things over, Tyla posted a tweet directed towards those expressing hate towards her. In that tweet, she said that haters always have to make things weird. To show that there was no ill will between them, Bailey retweeted the post, showing Tyla love.

The tweet and Bailey’s support still weren’t enough because Tyla has been trending nonstop on X since the show. Cardi B has also been trending on both X and TikTok as the only celeb who felt the need to defend Tyla. Cardi got on the space, talking about the pressure celebs feel and defending Tyla.

What Cardi Said About The Album

Cardi B also took the time to speak about her album, once again reassuring her fans that it would be coming son. For the past six years, she has been assuring her fans that her sophomore album will come out, but this time around, she seems more credible. She already released ”Enough (MIAMI)” to help promote the album. It was and remains the only song by a female rapper this year to peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Charts.

In the spaces, Cardi B told her fans she’s ready for any and everything concerning her album. Cardi B, who has broken and set many records, has always remained humble. The star has gotten 5 number one singles; her debut album landed at number one on the album charts and is the longest album by a female rapper to remain on the chart. She has 3 diamond singles and made history as the only female rapper to win a Grammy for Best Rap album. In the space, she said that she’s not letting anyone make her feel guilty for winning anymore.

Conclusion

Tyla’s success in the American market as a South African popstar seems to be causing issues with underlying xenophobia, but nobody is ready to address it. Cardi B, being a Dominican Afro-Latina, faced similar attacks, so it’s no wonder she supported Tyla. Things shouldn’t be like this, though. It’s time to give voices to individuals from diverse backgrounds without feeling intimidated and allow their art to speak for itself. This is what fans should understand.
