Who is Red Hulk? This is a question many might be asking after the first trailer of Captain America Brave New World. While Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross has been in the MCU for over a decade, this is the first time we see him as his fiery alter-ego. We don’t get much, just a split-second look at the end, but even that is enough to get fans excited. So, who is Red Hulk? Why are fans so excited about seeing this character on screen?
Who Is Red Hulk?
General Ross has long been at odds with Bruce Banner. He made his first appearance in the comics in 1962, but it wasn’t until 2008 that Red Hulk appeared in the comics. His transformation was done in secret and came out of grief. His daughter Betty was killed by Abomination. The Hulk had been exiled to outer space, leaving his life void of purpose. On the night Captain America was assassinated, he was approached by M.O.D.O.K and The Leader, who manipulated him into helping them with their plans.
They siphoned energy from the Hulk once he returned to Earth and used it to turn Ross into the Red Hulk. Unlike the Hulk, Ross was able to transform at will and be conscious while he was in Hulk form. In order to deflect suspicion, the group of villains replaced the general with a life-model decoy. He quickly became a fan-favorite character and even was one of the main characters in the television series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
Powers And Abilities
Red Hulk has similar powers and abilities to the Incredible Hulk. Superhuman strength, superhuman leaping, and healing factor are all powers that make any Hulk difficult to bring down. However, Ross has some distinct abilities. He emits gamma radiation which increases the angrier he gets. This radiation can get hot enough to burn anything he touches. If he overheats, a massive explosion happens which is highly dangerous.
MCU Version
The MCU differs from the comics, so on the silver screen, who is Red Hulk? The late William Hurt has carried the mantle of General Ross for over a decade. Harrison Ford takes over, and the first trailer of Captain America Brave New World gives an extensive look at the character in human form. Ross wants Sam Wilson to be a military asset. Wilson is skeptical, but after an assassination attempt, the events of the film are set in motion. We don’t get a long look at Red Hulk in the trailer, but it is enough to generate lots of discussion.
As the trailer comes to a close, we hear the familiar roar of a Hulk. Red Hulk appears on screen and slams the shield of Captain America to the ground. This signals that we will likely see a fight between Captain America and Thunderbolt Ross in his new form. It is unclear whether Ross will be the main antagonist or simply an obstacle to get over. Regardless, fans should be excited about seeing this character on screen in February.
