You’re planning a visit to Colorado, or maybe you just moved here, and you want to buy some weed. Here are some of the things you need to know about buying weed in Colorado. It’s not as “cut and dry” as you might think it is. So, what do you need to know before you buy weed in Colorado?
Not all Weed is Legal in Colorado

What do you mean “not all weed is legal” in Colorado? Well, even though marijuana is legalized here for recreational and medical use, you can’t just score from anyone on the streets. The sale and purchase of marijuana is still highly regulated in legalized states. There are stores or “dispensaries” to purchase from that have the required permits, licensing and documentation to sell you weed. Selling or purchasing marijuana from just anyone is still a no-no, and you can get in trouble for going about it the wrong way.
You Will Need to Show Identification
The authorized minimum age to buy weed in any legalized state is 21. Expect to have at least one form of Government issued identification. And expect to possibly show it more than once! The standards are strict and in this highly profitable business, no one is risking their license by not following the simple rules of procedure here. In some stores, there may even be a security guard at the front entrance checking ID’s before you can even enter. These checkpoints are necessary for stores to ensure compliance with the law, so don’t be surprised, or a jerk, if you have to show your ID a couple of times. Military IDs are accepted, and you even get a discount in most dispensaries!
Not Every Dispensary Has Recreational Marijuana

In some cities, like Colorado Springs, for example you may not be able to purchase marijuana products without a medical “red card”. This is a permit that Colorado residents can apply for, for medical need purposes which allow recipients of the permit to purchase at medical dispensaries anywhere in the state. Colorado Springs, for example, has a large military population with four installations just in The Springs alone. In this city, buying recreational marijuana is not an option. The outlying cities do have recreational facilities, so don’t abandon all hope for this city. Additional restrictions can apply in each of the cities as they see fit for the need.
Expect to Pay More at Recreational Facilities
Medical marijuana falls under a different tax category than recreational. Often prices at medical facilities are lower, and the products aren’t as heavily taxed, so you can expect to pay more in recreational purchases. Additionally, if you are buying in an area with high tourist activity, prices can be jacked up even higher for this novelty product. There are also areas that are a little more remotely located in Colorado where prices are higher simply because driving farther to purchase weed isn’t possible for everyone and the stores certainly have the advantage here.
It’s also important to note that you will need cash! Most dispensaries will provide an ATM machine just in case, but it is easier to simply come prepared with cash.
That One Tiny Cookie, Might Not be One Serving!

The yummy items like cookies, gummies, sodas, and other dessert like items aren’t always one serving. Even if it’s one drink, one gummy, or a small cookie or brownie. Check the milligrams and the serving sizes to be sure. It helps to know your tolerance level. You can get “too high” not that this is likely to cause any long-term medical issues, it can make for an unpleasant experience. It is important to know that edibles can take up to an hour or more to take effect, so take more with caution after waiting at least one hour.
Wax products like dabs and electronic vaporizers, which are often much stronger than flower alone, are not recommended for patrons under the age of 25 as it has been suggested to increase the risk for psychotic episodes.
You Can’t Just Smoke Anywhere
Just because Colorado is a legal state doesn’t mean you can just walk around getting high all day. Public spaces are not legal smoking areas. This includes bars, parks, hiking trails, cafes, sidewalks, and roads. As well as in your vehicle. The same laws for alcohol consumption apply here and you can end up with a DUI if you decide to drive and then smoke. This also includes bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and other non-gas or battery powered modes of transportation.
You Can Grow Your Own

Colorado residents over the age of 21 can grow up to six marijuana plants for personal use, and up to three of those can be in the flowering stage. Live with another adult over 21, they also get this same right! There are even special permits you can apply for to grow above the limit of 6 weed plants, but keep in mind this is still only for personal use. Another thing to consider is that growing weed isn’t exactly easy! You can’t do it outside here, for a number of reasons. One being that it must be secure. If there is anyone underage in the home, the plants must be locked away in a room that is inaccessible without a key. So, there is a bit of an expense to consider there.
Still Illegal on Military Facilities
Although individual states have made the choice to legalize weed, bringing it on a military facility is still illegal. These installations operate under their own rules and regulations and there can be big trouble for breaking those rules. Simply put, it’s really not worth it.
So, if you are planning a vacation to Colorado, now you know the important parts to buying weed in Colorado.
