Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest film, Bugonia, has taken the streaming world by storm, shattering viewership records on Peacock following its exclusive premiere on December 26. The paranoid thriller, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, has captivated audiences with its dark humor and intense performances, solidifying its status as a must-watch title this season.

Bugonia Becomes A Streaming Sensation

Since its debut on the platform, Bugonia has drawn massive numbers, quickly becoming one of Peacock’s most-watched film premieres. The movie’s unique premise—centering on a wealthy CEO (Stone) kidnapped by two conspiracy-obsessed men (Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who believe she is an alien bent on destroying Earth—has sparked widespread conversation and engagement across social media.

The film’s rapid success on streaming underscores the continued partnership between Universal Pictures and Peacock, delivering high-profile theatrical releases directly to homes shortly after their cinema runs.

Critical Acclaim and Oscar Momentum

The streaming success of Bugonia comes amidst a wave of critical acclaim and growing awards momentum. As Stone and Lanthimos look to replicate the success of their previous collaboration, Poor Things, the film is already making waves in the awards circuit.

Both Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons have received Golden Globe nominations for their lead roles in a musical or comedy, highlighting the strength of their performances. The film itself has also secured a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Further cementing its prestige, the American Film Institute (AFI) named Bugonia one of the top 10 movies of the year. It has also garnered Best Picture nominations from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. Variety awards predictions even place screenwriter Will Tracy in contention for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination for his unique take on the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet.

A Star-Studded Cast

Beyond the dynamic duo of Stone and Plemons, the film features a strong supporting cast that adds depth to its bizarre and compelling narrative. Aidan Delbis shines as the cousin caught up in the kidnapping plot, while comedian Stavros Halkias plays a police officer investigating the disappearance. Alicia Silverstone also makes a memorable appearance as Teddy’s mother.

With its record-breaking streaming debut and a trail of nominations leading toward the Academy Awards, Bugonia is proving to be both a commercial hit and a critical darling, offering viewers a darkly comedic ride that is unlike anything else on screen this year.
