It’s based on the life of the iconic performer, as chronicled in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me. The biopic will crest the ongoing nostalgia tsunami for the ’90s and early 2000s as audiences witness the reemergence of a turn-of-the-century icon.
Adapting True Drama to Film
Britney Spears told us in a recent IG post that instead of a biopic, she’s working on a “fictional musical where [she plays] an extremely intelligent character.” She is notorious for joking around, though. What we know for sure is that a Britney Spears movie is coming soon.
Universal won the rights to her popular autobiography The Woman in Me, with Jon M. Chu set to direct the adaptation. And Chu may be the perfect choice for telling Britney’s story. Having directed Wicked and Now You See Me 2 has given him the experience of capturing musical performances and Las Vegas showmanship. Plus, Crazy Rich Asians says a lot about his knack for family dynamics.
Britney Spears’s memoir details her career highlights and generation-defining public moments. Regarding her personal life, she speaks about her marriages, her turbulent relationship with Justin Timberlake, and most explosively, her dealings with her family and the struggles of her overlong conservatorship. All of it is gold for a sturdy biopic.

American Horror Story staple Emma Roberts has been floated as a possible casting choice for the popstar, initially endorsed by Spears’ former longtime personal assistant Felicia Culotta. The actor is highly enthusiastic. When asked, she told Cosmopolitan, “I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears. It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'”
It’s no surprise that Roberts would want to take on this role. Well-documented hardship often followed Britney, a fine meal for any actor. Perhaps even more thrilling, many quintessential MTV moments should be recreated on film.
Indeed, a shot-for-shot depiction of Britney Spears dancing with an albino python may soon exist. It is time for the rebirth of the classic denim dress. It would all make for gorgeous trailer fodder – and hopefully, everything will happen with Britney’s blessing.
