Twenty years ago, Pixar’s superhero action film The Incredibles was released. Featuring a star-studded cast and memorable characters, the film quickly became a Disney/Pixar fan favorite. Fourteen years after its release, the long-awaited sequel came out. The Incredibles 2 proved itself to be a worthy successor, but still, people wanted more. Released on October 24th, 2004, The Incredibles is set in a world where some people were born with superpowers and superheroes are a normal part of everyday life. Due to an unfortunate incident, working as a superhero became banned, as did supers using their abilities. We follow one specific family where the husband and wife are two of their day’s most popular and well-known superheroes.
The wife, Helen, is well adjusted to a normal, mild-mannered life with their three kids; the husband, Bob, however, isn’t. He used to be Mr. Incredible, a strong and well-beloved superhero, but now passionately hates civilian life. Eventually, Bob gets caught up in a villain’s scheme that could harm his family and must find a way to save them, along with the city.
Brad Bird, the film’s writer and director, put a lot of work into the movie to make it enjoyable for the whole family. The bonus features for the original film showcase just how many storylines and plot points they had planned before they ultimately crafted the plot that made the final cut. The movie could have taken a much darker turn and it’s clear that Bird let his creative mind run wild.
The Incredibles 2
Many Disney fans wanted The Incredibles 2; it was a highly requested and highly anticipated sequel. When any other Disney sequel was announced, it was common to hear people mention a desire for The Incredibles 2. Many wondered why Disney/Pixar wouldn’t capitalize on the movie’s success. Over a decade later, the long-awaited second installment was announced, and years later, it was released, once again written and directed by Brad Bird. On June 15th, 2018, fans finally saw the heroes’ stories continue, and the movie quickly became the highest-grossing animated film in history.
Although the sequel was released 14 years after the original, the movie picks up about 12 seconds after the first one ended. Fans were skeptical about this, wanting to see some time pass and the child characters grow up, but the plot worked well. People didn’t realize how many loose ends the first movie left that were nicely tied up in the second.
In this one, we follow Mrs. Incredible as she reprises her old alter ego: Elastigirl. She gets back into her superhero groove, taking the lead on the attempt to legalize supers again. Mr. Incredible, on the other hand, is home with the children, doing more domestic things that he isn’t used to handling. Ultimately, we see character growth from Helen and Bob, as well as from their two older children, Violet and Dash.
The Incredibles 3
At D23, it was announced that a third installment of the beloved franchise is in the works. Fans are over the moon about this and are happy to see their favorite characters on the big screen once again. While Brad Bird is developing The Incredibles 3, there isn’t clear confirmation on what his overall role in the project will be. The fans hope to see him return as director/writer of the film since they’re not sure what an Incredibles project would look like without his creative mind behind it. As of right now, there’s no confirmation on when the movie will begin production, who is returning, what the plot will be, or when it’s planned to be released.
Looking into what happened with The Incredibles 2 can give a bit of insight into what to expect. Bob Iger announced that the sequel began pre-production in 2014. Four years after that, the movie was released. It’s possible that The Incredibles 3 could follow the same timeline, meaning it would possibly be released in 2028. Even still, delays and other unforeseen things do happen. This isn’t a definitive answer, but it tells a story of how much time and work goes into making an animated film of this caliber. Furthermore, The Incredibles 2 saw a full returning cast, so it’s highly anticipated that we’ll see the same for The Incredibles 3.

People in their teens, twenties, thirties, and forties are highly anticipating this installment, despite it being a children’s franchise.
