When someone imagines a samurai, they rarely think of a bunny. Of course, there is always one exception to the rule: Miyamoto Usagi of the Usagi Yojimbo comics is one of the world’s most famous samurai. Since his grand debut in the 1980s, the rōnin rabbit has had many adventures, facing many foes and teaming up with other righteous heroes. For his series’ 40th anniversary, Usagi will meet the superpowered teenagers with attitude, the Power Rangers.
Usagi Yojimbo And Its Samurai
Created by Stan Sakai, Usagi Yojimbo takes place in an alternate version of early 17th-century Japan where anthropomorphic animals inhabit the land. The main character, Miyamoto Usagi, travels the country on a warrior’s pilgrimage and has a habit of sticking his nose into other people’s business. As a practitioner of bushido, Usagi defends the innocent and oppressed when the moment calls; he also often contends against his greatest foe, Jei, the Blade of the Gods.
Usagi Yojimbo was released in 1987, though Miyamoto Usagi made his first debut in 1984’s Albedo Anthopomorphics #2. Usagi Yojimbo is about 50 volumes long and has been translated into 18 different languages. It has earned its creator many prestigious awards like the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award. The series has even crossed over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on multiple occasions. Now, it will mix with another of the world’s most prominent franchises: Power Rangers.
The Heroic Color-Coded Teenagers
Adapted from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, a season of the Japanese Super Sentai TV series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was created by Haim Saban. The series revolved around five teenagers using dinosaur-themed powers to protect the Earth from monsters sent by the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa. The team is guided by their mentor, Zordon, and his robot assistant, Alpha 5, and are eventually joined by a sixth ranger in their battles against Rita and her crew.
Constructed by mixing stock footage from Zyuranger with new American footage, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers took on a distinct identity from its source material and developed its own versions of the heroes’ and villains’ backstories, among other things. Power Rangers became a phenomenon that took the world by storm, spawning an incredible franchise with sequel series, movies, comics, video games, and all kinds of physical merchandise. Power Rangers even crossed over with other franchises such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kamen Rider, and Godzilla. That trend continues with the crossover comic with Usagi Yojimbo.
Conclusion: An Epic Team-Up Of Mind-Blowing Proportions
The heroes will meet in the new one-shot, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Usagi Yojimbo #1. Produced by Boom! Studios, the fandom crossover will be written by Ryan Parrott. The plot of the crossover involves the Rangers teleporting to the Edo era of Japan. The mysterious Ogasawara asks the team to help defeat a mysterious foe, but things then become much more complicated. Power Rangers and Usagi fans will get to experience this wild crossover when the one-shot releases on September 25.
