5. Everything the Darkness Eats
Everything the Darkness Eats is number five on our list. It is a perfectly scary book written by Eric La Rocca and a relatively short read, about 200 pages. However, this book is terrifying, as it will literally consume you. Eric La Rocca published the book on June 13th, 2023, telling the story of several disappearances happening in a rural town.
Mysterious dark magic practices conjure bizarre issues for this quaint little town. If you are a fan of supernatural thrillers, this is the one to get your blood pumping and your heart racing. You don’t have to believe us; go give this book a read for yourself.
4. How to Sell a Haunted House
We love big books and we cannot lie … no seriously, this next book is about 430-440 pages full of suspense and horror. How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix is a little too hauntingly good to read. The book is about a pair of siblings dealing with the passing of their parents. While they determine how to handle the family home, they discover the house has plans of its own.
How to Sell a Haunted House was published on January 17, 2023, and it earns a spot on this list because it is one of those books that, once you read it, you will still desire to dive into it again as if you had never read it before.
3. The Makers of Darkness
Darkness is a recurring theme on this top-five list. This story by D.R. Kane is about a mysterious event that forces the world into a black abyss. Only several survivors remain, but no one is safe. A sinister voice coming from the shadows gets into people’s heads with horribly dark ideas. The Makers of Darkness is the first book in The Makers of Darkness Series.

Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror is number two on our chilling horror list. This book features a series of frightening stories written by Black authors.
We thought it would be easy to pick a story to talk a little about, but they were all equally important, so we couldn’t choose just one. Some writers included are Erin E. Adams, Lesley Nneka Arimah, N.K. Jemisin, and so many more talented authors. The further you go into this book, the more you get caught up in it. It is truly a captivating book.
1. Black Sheep
Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison was published on September 19, 2023. The book is a little over 300 pages; however, you will quickly get engrossed in its storyline. If you are a fan of Rachel Harrison, then you know her horror novels are always a hit. Harrison ventures into the dark secrets of a dysfunctional family’s dynamics. We do not want to give out spoilers, but we’ll give you a quick overview.
Harrison’s novel is about a young woman who heads home to attend a wedding but winds up confronting her toxic family with their sinister cult-like ways. We suggest you give it a read to see where Harrison takes the rest of this story. You won’t regret it.
