3 Genius Freida McFadden Books: A Plot Twists Mastermind

One of the most prolific and best-known authors in the thriller scene at the moment must be Freida McFadden. Many of her books have been listed on the New York Times Best Sellers List. Her brilliant method of stringing characters and narratives that always catch you off guard has gained her a fanbase that looks forward to every book of hers just so they can witness how she masterfully proves all their suspicions across the book to be wrong. She is the queen of plot twists, and in this article, we will recommend to you three of her best works.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

It is now a series of three books, but the first remains my favorite. In this story, Millie is a capable, young, and beautiful woman. The only problem she would face when applying for a job would be her criminal record. However, she needs a job to make a living for herself and lead a somewhat decent life after all she went through.

The winds of fate put her in front of the Winchesters’ family house. She came across their job offer that entailed residency, which she found to be perfect for her. Millie applies and tries to keep her expectations low, but to her surprise, the interview goes smoothly and she gets accepted.

Millie was welcomed by the wealthy Winchester family into their house as an in-house housemaid. Millie stays in the attic, and one of the strangest things she first notices about it is that it can only be closed from the outside. She didn’t think much of it, but as time went by, she started suspecting something was inherently wrong with the house lady, Nina Winchester, as her behavior kept growing more and more concerning. Millie does not expect to find herself in the situation she ends up in, and whenever she thinks it cannot get any worse, life proves her wrong.

This book can be a blueprint for how psychological thrillers should be executed because it quite literally makes you question your sanity. At times, I found myself going back to certain pages, trying to check whether I only imagined certain parts. The plot twists in this book are whiplash, so hang on tight going into it!

Our main character is the medical student Amy. When the time comes for her psychology rotation, it has to be done on a locked floor for 24 hours with many mentally unstable individuals. This makes her anxious for obvious reasons, but also because she holds a memory from her past that still unsettles her. Amy is also given orders to be careful of one specific patient that can be a real threat and to keep away from him as he already stays in a secluded room.

What also weighed on Amy’s mind was her partner for the evening, who happens to be her ex-boyfriend. They broke up because he cheated on her, and spending any time with him was not her ideal choice. Amy’s evening holds yet another surprise from her past as she comes across her ex-best friend Jade, who ended up in a mental institution after an attempted murder that Amy reported to the police by herself.

The night is still young, but the tone shifts. First, Amy’s ex-boyfriend disappears, and then she quickly finds herself stuck on a floor with many unreasonable people, which can potentially be extremely dangerous. As the night progresses, Amy keeps realizing that not all monsters have claws, and some of them hide in plain sight. This book is actually terrifying. I rarely feel genuine fear reading books, but this one just creeps into you and keeps you on your toes for the entirety of it. Even the way the characters are portrayed sends chills down your spine at times. It is indeed one of Freida’s best works.

The Locked Door

In this book, we follow Nora Davis. She is a surgeon, and her life could not be going any better until a murder suddenly happens. Now, what does a murder have to do with a successful surgeon? See, Nora’s father has been in jail for the last 26 years and is set to stay there for the rest of his life. He had a modus operandi, and the recent murder happens to be a copycat of that. But now that he is in jail, who would’ve possibly done it? Nora starts suspecting the people around her for the slightest of similarities she sees with her dad. However, she cannot shake the feeling that she is missing a piece.

Nora is being investigated, but she denies any ties to the crime. However, as the story progresses, the readers get to see her resorting to illegal ways to keep her name clear only because she knows she has nothing to do with it, but is that really the case?

Reading this book, I found myself thinking I figured it all out, only for Freida to laugh right into my face. Honestly, I immensely enjoyed being proven wrong. The aspect I loved most about this novel is that the reveal of the real murderer was not even the main plot twist, at least not for me. So you are certainly in for a ride with this one!
