Spider-Man Black Suit and Blood is a brand new addition to the comic lineup of Marvel’s favorite web-slinger. This comic is an anthology series that houses many separate, but related one-off stories, all by different writers and artists. The motif of the symbiote, or black suit that Spidey donned in the 1980s, that has become a fan favorite outfit for him ever since. How was this superstar collaboration of creators?
Black Suit and Blood’s Motif
As previously mentioned, the main motif throughout all of these stories is the black costume. This is easy to be seen as quite creatively bankrupt. It’s no secret that the main series Amazing Spider-Man books are not being reviewed favorably by critics and fans. Marvel putting out a comic series like this, is akin to when a popular band releases new versions of their old music. They’re trying to tap into the crowd that enjoyed the older stuff.
And while this is a bit heavy-handed, the storytelling is paramount. The big question is this: are the stories here compelling? And the answer is one hundred percent yes. There are a total of four stories in this comic, and they all deal with separate plotlines. “Dysmorphia” is a couple of pages long, but has almost an apocalyptic feeling to it with some great visuals. “Inside the House” stars Mary Jane and her suspicions of the symbiote, a really fun callback to the older comics.
Black Suit and Blood’s Heavy Hitters
Without a doubt, the two big heavy hitters here are “Losing Face” by JM DeMatteis and “Fade to Black” by J Michael Straczynski. If you’re a fan of Spidey’s comics, you’d recognize these two writers instantly. Black Suit and Blood is really pulling out all the stops. DeMatteis is one of the most acclaimed Spidey writers, writing his most famous story “Kraven’s Last Hunt” as well as many others. Straczynski took over the book in the early 2000s and is a fan-favorite writer as well.
Both these stories are incredible. Losing Face is a lot more classic Spidey, it actually has to do with an incredibly minor character from Kraven’s Last Hunt. It’s a beautiful story about how anyone can be a better person if they just try. It’s super heartfelt. Fade to Black is about the temptation of the symbiote suit, and while it gets very preachy, as JMS tends to, it is still excellently done. Needless to say, the art for both of these issues is incredible too. Losing Face has a more classic style for the setting. Fade to Black is a bit more modern, with some real stylish interpretations of the symbiote monster.
If Marvel Could Change
It’s no secret that fans are dissatisfied with the current Amazing Spider-Man comics. That is what is so intriguing about Black Suit and Blood. The writers all seem to focus on this classic era of Spider-Man’s history. In many of the stories, he is with Mary Jane. In the current comics, he and MJ are broken up. Black Suit and Blood almost feels like it’s teasing the fanbase. One can tell that these writers love it when Peter and MJ are together. You can just feel it from the heart of the story.
So the fact that the main series comics don’t get this, yet this comic does, really hurts. Why can’t the quality of Black Suit and Blood be found in the mainline series? Why must Spider-Man fans just accept that the current comic run is hosting stories and plotlines that feel so out of place for the character? It’s incredibly frustrating being a Spider-Man comic fan nowadays. One can only hope that Black Suit and Blood continues strongly, and eventually encourages the main series to take a similar direction.
