Pride Month is around the corner, and one of the best ways to celebrate and honor those who identify somewhere under the LGBTQ+ umbrella is to read books that will expand your knowledge and understanding of queer and trans history and experiences. Whether you like graphic novels, fiction, or nonfiction, there is something for you on this list of 5 LGBT+ books to read during Pride Month in 2024.
#1 Fantastic LGBT+ Books to Read During Pride Month
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe is an adult graphic novel memoir that takes the reader through the author’s exploration of self and queer identity. This graphic novel is beautifully illustrated and written well and tells the story of Maia’s life from childhood to adulthood and all of the experiences that shaped them.
#2 Fantastic LGBT+ Books to Read During Pride Month
We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib. Samra Habib is a Canadian immigrant from Pakistan who identifies as queer. This memoir begins in their early childhood in Pakistan and follows them through their young adult years in Canada, where they learn to come to terms with their identity and the pressures of being Muslim and queer. It’s a wonderful memoir, and I highly recommend it, even if you’re not a fan of memoirs.
#3 Fantastic LGBT+ Books to Read During Pride Month
All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson is a gorgeous collection of essays and short stories about what it is like to be a queer black person. Johnson covers topics such as queer identity, consent, black identity, and more in this anthology. If you’re looking for something that dives into deep topics on a small and manageable scale, this is the book for you.
#4 Fantastic LGBT+ Books to Read During Pride Month
Delilah Green Doesn’t Care by Ashley Herring Blake is a sapphic, spicy romance about a woman from New York with commitment issues who goes back to her small town of Bright Falls (which she swore she’d never step foot in again) for her estranged stepsister’s wedding. She meets someone, grapples with her identity, and ultimately must decide if Bright Falls is worth it. If you want something with romance and spice that’s just an overall fun read, this is for you.
#5 Fantastic LGBT+ Books to Read During Pride Month
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is the gay romantic comedy novel that inspired the Amazon Prime Original movie by the same name. It follows a fictional member of British royalty and the son of the president of the United States as they get to know each other and face the challenges of being gay and in the political spotlight. It’s cute, it’s funny, and it has everything a queer book needs, in my humble opinion.
So there you have it! This is not an exhaustive list, but these 5 LGBT+ books should be enough to get you started on your pride month reading. I hope you enjoy this selection and celebrate safely throughout the month. Happy Pride!
