That Time Deadpool Got His Own Shonen Jump Manga

Deadpool And Wolverine Crashed Comic-Con For Fantastic 4 Cast Disney+

It’s another thing to add to the list of his crazy adventures, but Deadpool did indeed get his own two-volume Shonen Jump manga series, Deadpool: Samurai. Despite the character’s popularity, he doesn’t have many shows, movies, cartoons, video games, or comics centered on him, at least compared to other comics characters like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. With a quick glimpse of the scenes he has in other characters’ stories, it’s easy to tell why a manga artist would want to make a manga series based on him. Let’s take a look into this series.

What To Know About Deadpool

Before getting into Deadpool: Samurai, it’s worth talking about the character himself first. Deadpool first appeared in December 1990 in New Mutants #98, a Marvel comic created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. He was originally a supervillain, before changing to an antihero, before becoming whatever type of hero the violent yet friendly and whimsical man would consider himself now.

The character’s civilian identity is Wade Wilson, while his supervillain/antihero/superhero costume is comedically close in appearance to the ones Spider-Man wears. Liefeld even admitted the character was like Spider-Man, only equipped with guns and swords and intended to be a jerk. One of the characters’ most famous traits is that he constantly breaks the fourth wall.

Deadpool has been paired with different characters over the years. Originally, he was paired with Cable, whom some fans should know of either based on reading the comics or watching the second Deadpool movie where Cable appears. The character’s most famous pairing, however, is with Wolverine; most recently, the two characters appeared together in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie that was released in July 2024. What makes the pairing great is that the witty, dark humor-loving, misshapen mercenary (played by Ryan Reynolds) works alongside a character who’s similar to the Terminator (Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman). Together, the pair has many comic misadventures.

Manga Creators

While manga artists get to choose their schedules and create amazing stories for readers to enjoy, they do face some downsides in terms of the very busy lifestyle and health conditions that often come with drawing for a living. Creating the art for a manga takes much effort. Even when using computers, artists still need to draw many characters, backgrounds, and other elements by hand. Sitting in one place and drawing all day can lead to back, neck, and wrist pain.

As the character is iconic for breaking the fourth wall and kind of a jerk already, Deadpool is an excellent way for the people working on the manga to vent some frustrations while remaining tongue-in-cheek. The writers can sometimes use the character as a mouthpiece to speak directly to readers. For instance, they use the character to make fun of some American comics that depend too much on dialogue or bash readers who flip through the pages too quickly, not taking the time to admire scenes it took illustrators and assistants days to draw. The manga’s creator and illustrator, Sanshirou Kasama and Hikaru Uesugi, both enjoyed creating the manga because of the character’s fun fourth wall-breaking powers.

Deadpool: Samurai

Deadpool: Samurai was serialized in Shonen Jump on December 10, 2020. As can be expected of the silly, blunt, fourth wall-breaking character, the manga centers around Deadpool’s silly shenanigans where plenty of things go wrong. As befits the Samurai in the title, the manga also contains amazing fight scenes that also feature many of the Avengers.

The plot involves the antihero landing in Tokyo, Japan because Iron Man invited him to join the Avenger’s new samurai squad. Iron Man thinks nothing could go wrong because he assumes Deadpool is only there for the money and the trip to Japan. Little does he know, though, that the antihero wants more than that!

To read the manga, you can either purchase physical copies or read the digital version on the popular digital manga site, Viz Media, for free after creating an account. After reading both volumes, you might even want to search for the anime created by the manga’s author to see more of their great work.

Conclusion: Enjoy Reading About Deadpool

The man in a red suit with guns and swords, a regenerative superpower, and lots of comebacks and sass, is going to be interesting to read, write about, or watch in whatever media he appears in. Deadpool: Samurai is an amazing series that incorporates much of the character’s most famous traits and shows more of his witty banter, violence, and misadventures. Him being the new leader of a samurai squad for the Avengers is something fans will want to see, both for a laugh and to learn more about the character’s newest interpretation.
