Darkness. Love. Deceit. Fear. Distress. Trauma. Mystery. Friendship. Despair. This story has it all. The Darkness Outside Us
Ambrose Cusk is sent out on a mission to rescue his sister, Minerva, from one of Jupiter’s moons from he doesn’t know what. Is she alive? Is she dead? Best-laid plans always seem to go awry. That is definitely the case on this mission. Life in a spaceship. Alone? Someone else is here. A voice that sounds like Mom but is called OS. A 1 box (tissue) sci-fi thriller love story that you won’t be able to put down.
Love and Fear in Darkness
“Best book I’ve read. The amount of shock, tears, heartfelt moments i’ve had was insane. This book kept you engaged and it kept you on your toes. I recommend this book to everyone always.” said Isaiah Jimenez.
The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer – Picture this. Two 17-year-olds alone in space. A distress signal from a sister, Minvera, driving their rescue mission. Sworn enemies now forced to work together in a situation that isn’t what it was supposed to be. A pleasant but unrelenting voice that is the ship’s operating system, the voice of Amborse’s mother. A mission that starts to seem like a farce.
“It’s an ode to love, tolight, the way int he darkness of love, relationsihps, grief, and choices. It’s haunting, heartbreaking, and nothing short of immense in its scale… Books like this don’t come around often, so pick this one up. You won’t regret it.” Madeline @ the Bookish Mutant
Two young men on a ship together on the same mission but for different reasons. Ambrose thinks he’s on a mission alone to rescue his sister from one of the moons of Jupiter, Titan. Kodiak’s told he needed to stay in his section, the other was to not know he was even there. Trapped. Lied to. Secret motives and unknown futures. Neither can even remember getting on the ship or the launch.
“I was immersed from start to finish in this adventure. It was a thrill ride of emotion and angst and I was here for every second of it!” review by Erik McManus
They will need to put their differences aside and forget the societal training that makes them enemies if they are to survive and uncover the real reason they are there, the real reason for the mission they have been sent on.
My Thoughts

This was a difficult review in that I want to talk about the book but don’t want to give it all away. This is a young adult fantasy packed with adventure, fear, love, hate, frustration, secrets, and mystery. I am not sure what else you could want in a book.
The book is not separated by chapters like most books. It’s sectioned out by the number of tasks left to complete. I know that probably doesn’t make sense, but it will as you read it. You think you have figured it out and then, nope, twist and turn and you’re starting over from the beginning.
Learning how the two men, boys really, are thrown together though they were raised to see each other as enemies, to figure out how to work together to complete a shared mission for very different reasons. The range of emotions Ambrose and Kodiak have as they learn from each other, complete their tasks, and uncover the mysteries of why they are really on the trip to Titan is a roller coaster of love, hate, disappointment, and trauma.
I would highly recommend reading or listening to this one. I have already pre-ordered the audio version of book 2, The Brightness Between Us, expected to be released on October 1st, 2024.
