“Call of the Wild” A Dog’s Unbelievable Odyssey

Call of the Wild” is a book that profoundly affects someone, especially if you are young and have a deep rapport with your canine friends. Because the lead of this tale is Buck, a sturdy St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd mix. The novel’s author, Jack London, was careful not to “anthropomorphize” this character by giving it an actual voice, for which he chose the third person limited omniscient narrative device to be closer to its animal “consciousness,” and this works like clockwork; the book became a sensation.

Call of the Wild” Created the Dog Hero Long Before Rin-Tin-Tin

In “Call of the Wild” Buck lives a happy life in California, completely oblivious to current events of the late 19th century, namely a gold rush in the northern regions that were attracting men and demanding resources, particularly large and strong, hairy dogs like himself. And so, Buck is stolen and spirited away into a series of misfortunes until he is sold to two Canadian government officers, François and Perrault, and Buck finds himself in the Klondike, Canada, where he will serve as a sled dog.

Now Buck has to learn about pack life in this hostile and harsh environment, where he will be antagonized by a mean, feisty husky called Spitz. In the end, Buck kills Spitz, becomes the lead dog of the pack, and experiences multiple seemingly endless travels and many hardships. He is sold one more time, and after a mishap at White River, he is saved by a man called Thornton. They develop a deep friendship as Buck begins hearing the call of the wild as he gets closer and closer to wolves.

You Write About What You Know

John Griffith Chaney, whose nom de plume was Jack London, was no stranger to these landscapes and harsh circumstances, having been a hobo who went from his native California to the indomitable territories of Alaska and Yukon in search of riches. During this time, he read Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, which explain the connections between the natural world and a peculiar spirituality found in “Call of the Wild”.

The intensity of events and the vivid depictions of nature in all its unforgiving magnificence are directly extracted from Jack London’s personal experiences during the Klondike Gold Rush. He said that it was in the Klondike where he found himself. This left a mark so deep that it affected his otherwise physically strong self; he endured conditions so extreme that his health was compromised for life and led to an untimely death at 41 after suffering from multiple ills such as scurvy, tropical diseases, and yaws.

Jack London Entered Literary Unknown Territory

Call of the Wild” is a tale of epic proportions with a canine hero at its center. I mean that in a literary sense. Let me explain. Before the publication of “Call of the Wild” in 1903, there had never been any novels that dealt with an animal´s perspective from cover to cover. There were animal fables and folk tales, but nothing remotely as radical and groundbreaking as this. This explains, in part, the excitement for this book at the time and the emergence of the naturalist literary movement.

The Adventure Never Ends

Call of the Wild” is a classical literary gift that keeps on giving. It is quite possible that without this seminal book, dog-themed books such as “I Am Marley” by John Grogan, “Travels with Charlie” by John Steinbeck, and more recently, “The Eyes and the Impossible” by Dave Eggers, would have never existed. And that’s a lot. I can’t imagine a world without literature or dogs; that would really be a waste.
