5 Amazing Fantasy Books To Read After ‘Lord of the Rings’

The perfect blend of atmosphere and world-building, magic, mysticism, and action-packed fights, Lord of the Rings is one of those books that goes down in history as a classic fantasy piece. It will be talked about for centuries to come because it is just that good. You might be looking for books that give that same feeling of comfort while reading.

The following books are “cozy” in that they give that same atmospheric comfort that LOTR and The Hobbit do. Some of them are cozy fantasies, the others are epic fantasies that have comforting writing styles.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive series is perfect for those who are looking for the same sort of action-packed prose and political maneuvering as Lord of the Rings. The first book in this series is called The Way of Kings and it follows a few different characters as they take their first steps toward the epic journey that will bring them together as the series goes on. The Way of Kings has politics, action, and wonderful characters that you’ll fall in love with.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Christopher Paolini published Eragon when he was just 19 years old and to say it took off in the fantasy world is an understatement. If you love classic fantasy, you’ve probably at least heard of The Inheritance Cycle series, which Eragon is the first of 5 books in. Eragon follows a poor farm boy who discovers a dragon egg in the forest. He is swept away into the world of the dragon riders and the fate of his empire seemingly rests upon his shoulders. Eragon is a gorgeous story with a talking dragon – what more can you ask for?

Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne

Now for something a bit more literal on the “cozy” front, we have Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea. This is a story that follows a couple who are setting up a bookshop that will serve tea. They just want to settle down and have some relaxing time in their life together. But when an assassin takes one of them hostage, adventure begins! The book’s summary says, “What follows is a cozy tale of mishaps, mysteries, and a murderous queen throwing the realm’s biggest temper tantrum”. Sounds like a good time to me.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries is one of the coziest books I’ve read in a long time. Set on an alternate Earth where faeries exist, Emily Wilde is a professor who studies the fae. This book is told through her field journal entries in which she details her latest expedition to study the fae. There’s a rivals-to-lovers subplot, a little faerie who bakes bread, and even a mystery to unravel. It’s gorgeously atmospheric and while it lacks the intense politicking and war that LOTR is known for, this still might be a good book for you to pick up.

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

Two Brandon Sanderson recommendations in the same list? Why yes, you’re reading this right. Brandon Sanderson has not only mastered the epic fantasy, but he has mastered the cozy fantasy as well. Tress of the Emerald Sea is about a young girl named Tress who goes on a grand adventure across a magical sea to rescue the love of her life. She ends up on a pirate ship, gets roped into schemes, meets a talking rat… it’s a ton of fun. If you’re looking for something lighthearted, this is for you.

Conclusion: Fantasy to Read After Lord of the Rings

If you’re looking for something to read after Lord of the Rings, look no further. Whether it’s another epic fantasy like The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, or something cozier like Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea, this list of 5 books for Lord of the Rings fans is sure to help you find your next read.
