Bonnie Wright’s Requests At Harry Potter Event
Last Sunday, Bonnie Wright attended a Back to Hogwarts event in New York City. Variety spoke to her about her wish list for the new show. “More of the development of the relationship between Ginny and Harry,” Wright told them, referring to her character Ginny Weasley, and her romantic connection to Harry Potter. “There are nuanced moments where they begin to fall in love. I think more of that arc of her character becoming this real loyal sidekick to Harry and how she really understands and knows his story and who he is and is the best partner for him.” She also expressed her desire to see greater development for many other characters.
Her request echoes a lot of fan reactions to the portrayal of side characters in the original movies. Due to the time constraints inherent in adapting hundreds of pages per book into 120-150 minutes of film, quite a few memorable moments from the books are lost in service of pacing. Though she is Harry’s love interest, Ginny is not part of the famous Harry-Ron-Hermione trio and therefore suffers from a truncated storyline on film. In the books, Ginny grows from a kid who is shy around her crush into a powerful young witch, but her evolution happens here and there in the background while the trio confronts the life-threatening issue of the current school year.
Wizarding World of Harry Potter Continues to Expand
A prudent filmmaking approach would justify the loss of anything that does not directly serve the main storyline, as disheartening as it is to have missed out on Ginny’s Quidditch prowess, among her other achievements. Perhaps the sprawl of a long-running television show will finally allow for a full depiction of the fan-favorite supporting cast. In particular, the less prominent gang of Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood stand to see plenty more action this time.
This is as good an excuse as any for the existence of a second adaptation of the main Harry Potter series. With the original movies concluding relatively recently in 2011 and J.K. Rowling becoming such a divisive figure lately, a remake may not seem like an obvious move, despite the financial incentive. After all, with the theme park, the stage play, and the Fantastic Beasts prequels, Harry Potter fans haven’t had a chance to catch their breath in two decades. Still, regardless of the Harry Potter IP oversaturation, this series represents another opportunity for fans to witness different book scenes captured on film.
Final Thoughts
The adaptation is currently slated to premiere in 2026 on HBO, and this early in pre-production, there’s no casting news on any characters. Whoever she is and whatever her storylines, the next Ginny Weasley should be in good hands with the creative team that has been announced. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod come from the highest HBO pedigree, with both having worked on Succession.
The visuals of Harry Potter have become familiar throughout the years, cementing themselves as childhood staples for many. So, setting aside misgivings about Rowling or potential cash grabs, fans might consider revisiting the Wizarding World, to see it anew as envisioned by another group of talented storytellers.
