Looking Back At Beetlejuice's 1989 Animated Series

Beetlejuice, the ghost with the most, is a horror-comedy cinema icon. Since 1988, he’s been in many forms of entertainment, including movies and a Broadway musical. One thing fans remember is the animated show from 1989. The cartoon was popular during its run and joined the roster of other great movie-based shows. To this day, many still adore it and would love to see it return.

Don’t Say His Name Three Times

Directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as the title character, the movie Beetlejuice (1988) is about the Maitlands, a recently deceased young couple who seek to get their beloved home back from the eccentric Deetz family that have moved in after the couple passed. Despite their efforts to get the Deetz family to leave, the ghostly couple become friends with the young gothic Lydia Deetz. When the Maitlands’ initial scare tactics fail, they’re forcing them to recruit Beetlejuice for help. His disgusting and awful behavior changes the couple’s mind in working with him, though the phantom sticks around to cause chaos.

The movie became a huge box office success thanks to its originality and creativity. As the embodiment of dark comedy, the film depicts death in a more pleasant light and gives each character a fun, memorable quirk. It also helped boost Winona Ryder’s rise to fame. Beetlejuice is renowned as a cult classic and a staple feature during Halloween time; it even spawned a small franchise, including the beloved cartoon series.

The Series With the Most

Produced by Tim Burton himself, the cartoon kept the creative chaos of the movie but took the main character in a more kid-friendly direction. Instead of being an antagonistic specter, Beetlejuice was more of a troublemaking con man. Another change was his relationship with Lydia Deetz, being her best friend rather than a predatory figure trying to force her into marriage. The pair went on many crazy adventures that parodied popular films and shows.

Another change from the movie was the removal of the Maitlands. It’s not known why the couple weren’t brought over to the cartoon, though it could be because of Beetlejuice’s change in character. The show instead introduced many new characters to replace the Maitlands. Despite the differences between the movie and the series, the show was still fantastic and ran for two years. It even won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 1990.

Rumors of a New Show

Recently, rumors of a new Beetlejuice animated series began surfacing. It wasn’t until a post on Facebook popped up that people started getting excited. It featured a poster depicting Beetlejuice and Lydia for an animated series entitled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The post insinuated that the show would follow a similar premise to the new movie. Some people even interpreted it as a reboot or return of the original animated series; however, things are not what they appear to be, and it’s a shame.

The post and the poster are fabricated, most likely reposted fan art. There is also no evidence of a new Beetlejuice series in production. A deeper probe showed that the account responsible states that it makes fake news. It appears these rumors are likely from viewers unfamiliar with this content. It could also be from wishful thinking from fans of the 80s series. Either way, people are becoming more excited to see the new movie premiering this September.
