Baseball cards are not the only type of sports cards that people collect, but they are probably the most noteworthy. There are great classic cards and great rookie cards as well. By following the rules, one can become wealthy if one collects these cards.

However, there are some things to know about collecting baseball cards. To a certain degree, the ‘rules’ are different for classic and new cards. However, if one follows these rules, they will become wealthy. In this sense, this article is quite valuable. Who are the hot rookies right now?

Classic Baseball Cards

Here are some rules about collecting classic cards that apply generally. First and foremost, have your cards graded. Those rated by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator). Second, there are certain baseball cards that tend to be worth more. Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, and Mickey Mantle (internal link) are the most valuable players.

Third, older cards tend to be worth more. The dividing line is 1970. Finally, and related to the next section, rookie cards are worth a lot more money and are singled out when one collects old baseball card sets. It is actually a little strange; the rookie cards for each set are called out separately in price guides. Speaking of price guides, it is a good idea to invest in one of those if you are going to start a hobby.

There are some good rookie baseball players right now, whose cards might be worthwhile. Who are they? One that is worth collecting is Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees, who debuted in 2025. He is outstanding and could win the Cy Young Award in the American League. If he does, get a grade 10 card.

Another pitcher, who is a rookie and more of a long shot. Trey Yesavage of the Toronto Blue Jays dominates hitters with the highest release point in Major League Baseball, but he doesn’t give the Blue Jays any length. So, right now, he looks like a bit of a bust. If you are interested in a long shot, this is your guy.

A hitter that might be a bit of a long shot is Roman Anthony of the Boston Red Sox. He has been hurt this year and has only played 30 games this year. He is a talented young hitter, in a good batting order, and likely a good bet to succeed. That means his baseball cards will be worth a lot of money.

Jac Caglianone of the Kansas City Royals is a powerful hitter on a bad team. Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers has a 1.45 earned run average right now and is striking out batters at an historic rate with his 102-mile-per-hour fastball. Either of these two players would be good investments.

Conclusion

Baseball card collecting is a good pastime that might be lucrative. This would be the case if you follow the rules and hit on a few good rookie cards. The best thing about this pastime is that it is fun. It is also a pastime that could appeal to those who are obsessive-compulsive. Getting an entire set of baseball cards and putting them in number order might appeal to the more OCD among us. The best way to do it is to put the cards, which all have numbers on them, into piles of 100s and then put those piles into piles of 10, and then put those smaller piles into number order.
