“Baby Reindeer” Actress Jessica Gunning Notches Her First Emmy Win

Baby Reindeer

British actor Jessica Gunning delivered a refreshing speech at Sunday’s Emmy Awards. She won the outstanding supporting role in Netflix’s Baby Reindeer limited series. Gunning thanked the show’s creator, her co-star Richard Gadd, for the opportunity that allowed her to win her first Emmy. She warned the audience that she was liable to sing Baby Reindeer‘s praises – in the most literal sense of the phrase – as that was the only adequate avenue for her feelings.

Jessica Gunning won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie for her exemplary turn in Baby Reindeer. Her charming acceptance speech highlighted her immense appreciation for show creator Richard Gadd and the part that won her the night.

Her opener was “blinking heckers,” and things only improved. She kept it short and sweet, endearing herself to the people watching at home. “I’ve tried so many times to say what working on Baby Reindeer meant to me, and I fail every time. So, I’m going to sing… no, imagine,” she delightfully threatened the audience as presenters Antony Starr, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kathy Bates beamed behind her.

While decently known in the UK for her work in the television series Back, The Outlaws, and Doctor Who, Jessica Gunning became an international success with her portrayal of a complicated stalker in the Baby Reindeer miniseries. The hit Netflix show facilitated Gunning’s breakthrough to an American audience, giving her the highest acclaim of her 16-year career.

Baby Reindeer Sweeps

The Television Academy adored Baby Reindeer, crowning it its favorite limited series of the season. In addition to Gunning’s Supporting Actress award, the program earned five more Emmys, earning 11 total nominations. For the Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series accolade, Baby Reindeer beat out heavy hitters like True Detective: Night Country, Fargo, and Ripley. It also won in editing, writing, lead actor, and casting categories.

And not without good reason. Through years of workshopping and stage shows, young creator and lead actor Richard Gadd developed a deeply personal story. He allowed the audience to connect with deeply flawed people, seemingly without sugarcoating the danger in the experience. He and Gunning worked together to humanize characters who could be perceived as either would-be monsters or simplistic caricatures. Even so, they cultivated the unsettling atmosphere to award-winning perfection, bringing life to a haunting story of desire and self-hatred.

Final Thoughts

Baby Reindeer‘s successful awards season continues Netflix’s strong sense of limited series. Last year, Ali Wong’s Beef earned the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and a waterfall of other awards for writing, acting, directing, and so forth. Whatever Netflix might struggle with when it comes to viewership figures and subscriber numbers, its miniseries are consistently striking gold.
