Marvel Unveils Avengers 5 to Explode Theatres in 2026

Avengers 5 will arrive on the big screens on May 1, 2026, courtesy of Marvel Studios. The movie will see several heroes and villains return to the MCU. A big reveal during Marvel’s July 27 Hall H panel at San Deigo Comic-Con was the return of Robert Downey Jr., who started it all in 2008. Even more surprising is that he won’t be reprising Tony Stark; Downey Jr. will play villain Victor Von Doom. Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, is the classic villain of the Fantastic Four.

The following two Avengers films were initially set around Kang The Conquerer, getting the title Avengers: Kang Dynasty, while the sixth was named Avengers: Secret Wars. Things took a turn when Kang actor Johnathan Majors got fired for assault charges. Since then, Marvel has shifted gears away from Kang and made Dr. Doom the next major villain. At this year’s Comic-Con, the Russo brothers, directors of the previous two Avengers films, were announced to return and will be directing Avengers: Doomsday.

Avengers 5 Filming

While a couple of Marvel projects are due before Avengers 5, the Russo brothers confirmed that the film will start filming in Spring 2025. Additionally, the Russo brothers and collaborator Stephen McFeely are penning the script for the movie. Also, unlike Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will not be filmed back-to-back since that film and Secret Wars are a year apart. Downey Jr. will also have a nice big check for playing the classic villain.

Since filming will begin next year, it will have at least 12 months to finish and complete post-production to meet its 2026 release year. Around that time, one can assume that the Russos will begin working on Secret Wars, making the duo’s schedule busy. Alongside RDJ, the only confirmed cast members are the Fantastic Four squad, which consists of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theatres on July 25, 2025. Considering Victor Von Doom to be a classic Fantastic Four villain, it’s possible that he could appear in First Steps. However, the director, Matt Shakman, teased Galactus as the main villain. Also, the movie will be a period piece. During an interview with GamesRadar+, Joe Russo explained how the big news came about with Downey Jr’s casting and his and Anthony’s closeness to RDJ. “We’re all very close,” Joe said.

He continues expanding on their relationship, “We had been working on another project before Marvel approached all of us – so we’re working on another project with Robert – and there was a story that evolved through conversations that we got very excited about. Because it’s always got to be the story.” Although he didn’t go into specifics about the story for Avengers: Doomsday, Joe explained that he believed that he and his brother had a story that could be explosive compared to Infinity War and Endgame.

Joe Russo Teases Something Big For Avengers 5

The plot for the upcoming Avengers team-up is still being kept under wraps, and Joe says that fans can expect something huge from the movie. He said, “Why would we come back if we didn’t feel like we had a story that had that possibility of being on an equal footing with Infinity War and Endgame unless there’s a kernel there for an idea that’s really explosive?” Whatever happens, fans can expect something huge for Avengers: Doomsday.

Infinity War and Endgame would be difficult to match, but the Russo brothers would be the right fit to match them. They had already strangled over 20 Marvel films to conclude the Infinity Saga. The Russo brothers have directed other Marvel films, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and the previous two Avengers movies. Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise was a bigger shock than the Russo brothers returning because fans naturally assumed that he would be Tony Stark/Iron Man again.

Although Tony died by sacrificing himself in Endgame, the door could be open for RDJ to play a different version of the character now that the MCU is exploring the Multiverse. However, that won’t likely happen, as fans know he’s playing Doctor Doom. Also, one actor let slip that seems to confirm returning in Avengers: Doomsday and that actor is Benedict Cumberbatch.

In an interview for Netflix, Cumberbatch commented on the Avengers franchise. He said, “I’m very much looking forward to Avengers next year, which is cooking up a storm.” This statement likely confirms that Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Doomsday. In expressing joy in his role as Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch said, “The joy of playing him is immense, but also the joy of playing him means I can help create and platform stories and writing and less-commercial fare into being.” “So he’s a gift in many ways in my life, as a producer as an actor. I love playing him. He’s a great fun.”

Final Thoughts

2024 was a massive year for the studio because Deadpool & Wolverine smashed box office records. Additionally, The MCU has endured a lot of transitions behind the scenes, especially the firing of Majors, which led to the complete shift of using Doom as the next Avengers-level big bad. The transition for Marvel is a big leap, and introducing Doom will be crucial to help establish Avengers 5 and 6. It remains to be seen what will happen in Avengers: Doomsday since plot details haven’t yet been revealed to the public.

There is tons of excitement following the news of Tom Holland’s forthcoming Spider-Man 4. After the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Holland recently confirmed that the movie is happening and that it will begin filming next year. After the ending of No Way Home, the story could go in many ways, including some multiversal shenanigans. Dustin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi Legend of The Ten Rings, will direct the film.

Where the story goes is a mystery, especially since the world has forgotten that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including his love interest MJ (Zendaya). Chris Mckenna and Erik Sommers are writing the script, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and ex-Sony head Amy Pascal are producing the movie. Holland has also appeared in the last two Avengers films, so it would be more than likely that he would have a role in Avengers 5.

It has been five years since Avengers: Endgame took the world by storm and brought satisfying conclusions for our original six as we knew them. With Phase 6, there are brand new stories to tell, and it all launches with Avengers 5. While there won’t be plot details available to the public any time soon, fans can expect Avengers 5 and 6 to be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame. Of course, with the advancement of the internet, fans can expect leakers to expose any theories, rumors, or confirmed news that haven’t been made to the public.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
