Anne Hathaway’s Best Movies, Ranked

Anne Hathaway's Best Movies Ranked

Anne Hathaway is a household name in Hollywood. Born in Brooklyn, New York, the 41-year-old actress has starred in over 50 projects, been nominated for 122 awards, and won over 60 of them so far. With so many projects under her belt and more in the works, some box office flops will be mixed in there; however, Hathaway always brings her best performance in every project she’s in. Today we’ll be going through some of the best films in her career.

In her breakout film role in The Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway plays San Francisco teen Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she’s next in line for the throne of the fictional European country Genovia. Throughout the movie, Mia struggles to balance her normal life with her royal one while also bonding with her grandmother, Queen Clarisse, played by Julie Andrews. The Princess Diaries shows how from the beginning of her career Hathaway could play leading roles excellently. Over 20 years later, The Princess Diaries and its sequels are still loved by many.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Many people would cite Meryl Streep’s role as fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly as the standout performance in this classic film; however, Anne Hathaway’s role as hopeful recent college graduate Andy Sachs is equally as powerful. The two actresses play almost mirror images of each other, one looking into the past and the other the future. Their dynamic as women making it in the cutthroat world of fashion journalism is what keeps The Devils Wears Prada’s tension and drama running so deep. The two actresses’ performances complement each other perfectly, making Hathaway and Streep a duo Hollywood should pair together more often.

Interstellar (2014)

When Earth becomes uninhabitable, an ex-NASA pilot played by Matthew McConaughey must set out to find another planet hospitable for humans. Hathaway portrays Brand, a fellow NASA scientist on this quest to save humanity. Interstellar is an intense, tragic sci-fi movie, and Hathaway gives a captivating, heartbreaking performance. Although her character isn’t the film’s central protagonist, she brings some much aching emotion to Brands’ life that the audience can’t help feeling for her.

Hoodwinked! (2005)

A unique twist on the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood, this animated film gave Hathaway a chance to show off her voice acting skills. Hookwinked! follows the main characters as they recount events of the classic story and many other ones unique to the film version to their fairytale land’s police department. A magical, silly twist on classic children’s stories and crime movies, this this animated cult classic may have been just another film from Hathaway’s early career; however, its devoted fanbase and constant re-discovery by the new generations keeps it as one of her best underrated works.

Les Misérables (2012)

Although Hathaway only appeared near the beginning of this almost three-hour opera, her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” earned her over 60 nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, which she won. Hathaway portrays Fantine, a single mother struggling to support her child who falls into prostitution and dies after Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman, promises to care for her daughter Cosette. She later appears in Valjean’s memories in the movie’s final act. Hathaway’s emotional performance at the beginning sets up the tragedy to come later.

Final Thoughts: Anne Hathaway’s Talent

These are just some of the best films Hathaway has made during her over twenty-year career. With more projects coming, it doesn’t look like she will be stopping anytime soon. These films showcase Hathaway’s incredible talent as an actress. She can take on any type of role, whether big or small, and give it all she’s got.
