5 Classic Anime That Stand the Test of Time and Are Still Essential Today
Classic anime shows and movies have been Entertainment cornerstones throughout the decades. They have spanned across various genres and introduced us to countless iconic characters and stories. And gave way to the series and films we know and adore today. Enthusiasts consider many of these installments to be timeless masterpieces worth revisiting whenever. However, would it surprise you to know that some consider them essential as well?

Additionally, an amazing jazzy soundtrack helps viewers immerse themselves in the action-packed universe.

Responsible for popularizing anime in the West, “Sailor Moon” reshaped the magical girl genre. The series attracted fans with its story of a high school girl protecting Earth. And all the while she grows from an insecure klutz to a strong, capable leader. This anime drew in viewers with its humor, action, drama, depth, and magic. Still revered to this day, it takes the title of anime’s most beloved series.
3. “Dragon Ball Z” (1989-1996)
“Dragon Ball Z” is another still-celebrated anime that redefined the shonen genre. It continues the story of Son Goku previously set in “Dragon Ball.” And it features him taking on deadly foes unlike any he’s faced before. “Dragon Ball Z” draws people in with its comedy, characters, mind-blowing transformations, and memorable battles. Still, it isn’t shy about showcasing themes centered around friendship, perseverance, and hard work.
2. “Akira” (1988)
The only film on this list, “Akira,” contains groundbreaking animation and mature themes. It presents a story centered around the cost of power, corruption, and friendship. And it has influenced countless people since its debut, granting it an eternal legacy. The movie centers on two friends, Kaneda and Tetsuo, surviving in the post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo. Later on, Tetsuo suddenly develops psychic powers and goes on a rampage.
1. “Neon Genesis Evangelion” (1995-1996)
“Neon Genesis Evangelion” features a teenager protecting humanity from monsters with a giant bio-mechanical robot. In addition, he must confront his personal conflicts, like those involving his distant father. “Neon Genesis Evangelion” entertained by blending heart-pounding action with psychological themes. And it redefined the mecha genre with its narrative, mature themes, characters, and symbolism. Given all that, it’s easy to see why “Evangelion” is considered the most essential anime.
Final Thoughts on These Essential Anime
I honestly see why these five anime shows are labeled essential. They either redefined a genre in a way no one has ever seen before. Or they brought something new to the industry that made them stand out. In the end, they acquired the status of iconic and beloved. People everywhere consider them top-tier in terms of Japanese animated programming.
Surprisingly, I’m familiar with four of the above-mentioned entries on this list. I used to watch “Cowboy Bebop,” “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” “Dragon Ball Z,” and “Sailor Moon.” Though “Bebop” and “Evangelion” were my utmost favorites out of the bunch.
