Wallace and Gromit, produced by Aardman Animations, headquartered in Bristol, England, are iconic characters. The eccentric genius and his silent partner have starred in countless shorts and a movie. Vengeance Most Fowl is the latest addition to the collection of suspenseful animated adventures. Wallace becomes accused of being a criminal mastermind as an old foe returns. The film debuted at the American Film Institute, and audiences were amazed.
A Cheese-Loving Inventor and His Beagle
Wallace and Gromit debuted in the short film A Grand Day Out. Audiences were immediately taken with the feature, leading to more. The characters were even given personalities and traits, with Wallace becoming an engineering genius. Gromit became the silent, straight man with a knack for homemaking and knitting.
Most Wallace and Gromit films involved the titular characters running various businesses. Such enterprises ranged from home-style bakers to pest controllers for neighborhood gardens. Of course, they’d use Wallace’s wacky yet genius inventions to make the work easier. Wallace and Gromit would even meet colorful new characters while on the job. These individuals include Wallace’s reciprocating love interests, like Wendolene from A Close Shave. Other times, they are antagonists like the star villain of Vengeance Most Fowl, Feathers McGraw.
These Pants Aren’t for Walking
Vengeance Most Fowl semi-follows the events from the short film The Wrong Trousers. In The Wrong Trousers, it is Gromit’s birthday, and Wallace has a present for him. The gift turns out to be a pair of robotic legs called Techno Trousers. Wallace, at the same time, receives expensive bills but has little money to pay them. He decides to rent out their spare room and immediately gains a renter. It turns out to be an awkward and silent penguin named Feathers McGraw.
Feathers eventually replace Gromit as the helpful household animal, prompting Gromit to leave home. The next day, Wallace becomes trapped in the Techno Trousers and runs throughout the town. Gromit sees this and discovers Feathers controlling the robotic pants with a remote. The penguin later controls a sleeping Wallace to steal a massive diamond from a museum. Afterward, the heroic duo chase Feathers around the house and capture him. They send the feathered thief to jail and acquire a reward that clears their debts.
The Premiere of Vengeance Most Fowl
In Vengeance Most Fowl, Wallace creates the Norbot, a robotic ‘smart’ gnome designed for housework. Gromit is wary of it and becomes concerned about his master’s dependence on technology. A crime wave suddenly hits the city, and all signs point to Wallace. The inventor claims he’s innocent and someone else must be behind everything. Gromit must find the true culprit and protect his eccentric master. However, things take a turn when his search leads him to a vengeful Feathers McGraw.
Vengeance Most Fowl premiered at the American Film Institute for a special event. Critics were delighted with the stop-motion movie, receiving a 100% from Rotten Tomatoes. It is considered a ‘Must-See’ on MetaCritic with a ‘Universal Acclaim’ and is rated 82. The cast includes Ben Whitehead, Reece Shearsmith, Peter Kay, and Lauren Patel. Vengeance Most Fowl is said to contain references from previous adventures, such as Gromit’s motorbike.
Final Thoughts
Vengeance Most Fowl seems like an incredible Wallace and Gromit adventure. The fact that an old enemy is returning is surprising, a first for the franchise. It’ll also be interesting to see Ben Whitehead portray Wallace after the late Peter Sallis. Vengeance Most Fowl will premiere globally on Netflix on January 3rd.
