If you don’t like trolls, this entire movie franchise will change many of your opinions about them, especially the sequel, Trolls Band Together. The whole Trolls movie franchise is a treat to watch, and it helps others see trolls differently. They realize that some songs in animated movies aren’t that bad, especially those sung throughout each movie. Each of the three Trolls movies has many musical numbers for anyone who doesn’t know. This is typical for animated movies and cartoons, but these films do it better somehow!
This post will contain spoilers for anyone who has not seen the movies.
The Trolls Movie Series
There are three movies in the franchise. Trolls (from 2016), Trolls World Tour (during the COVID era of 2020), and finally, the sequel that is the topic of discussion now, Trolls Band Together (2023), all created by DreamWorks Animation. Unlike other children-targeted franchises, the first movie was inspired by the popular Good Luck Troll dolls, which Thomas Dam created. It is unlike any other series, where the cartoon inspired the toy lineup.
There is also some extra content for them, such as the holiday specials you can watch on TV, called Trolls: Holiday and Trolls: Holiday in Harmony. This is followed by two animated series, Trolls: The Beat Goes On! And Trolls: TrollsTopia. As you can tell from a couple of the titles, music plays a big part in this franchise. Hence why, the most recent sequel, Trolls Band Together, was such a major movie for the series, attracting more fans.
The movie is about Trolls who can sing and some who can dance. All the Trolls have musical talent, and music plays a big part in their lives. This aspect of them is further explored in Trolls World Tour and shown how fatal or vital it can be throughout Trolls Band Together. They all follow the adventures of the two main Trolls, Poppy and Branch, their village of pop-singing Trolls, and eventually, Trolls who sing in other musical genres.
Music in Trolls
Before understanding why Trolls Band Together gained popularity compared to the previous movies, it’s best to understand the music aspect. You can listen to each soundtrack from each film for some audible understanding, especially the ones from Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together due to the more mature and epic songs and themes.
The way some newer fans can best understand it is in the Trolls universe. Music is deeply intertwined with the lives of their species, so, of course, there is a lot of singing, musical numbers, and soundtracks. However, the songs differ from the random musical numbers in other animated movies. The songs have a purpose and some possible explanations for the music. The background and side characters know that the character is singing and not just going along with it and pretending it’s normal, and the song and dance numbers are acknowledged!
Purpose of Songs in Kid’s Movies
This is not to say that the Trolls franchise is just for kids since animated films are entertaining for any age. It’s just that many of us may already know that the Trolls franchise, leading up to Trolls Band Together, was intended for a young audience. Fortunately, with Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together sequel, it was likely that the makers of the movies slowly began to understand that older audiences enjoyed watching them too and catered to them based on the villains.
The way musical numbers in children’s cartoons are intended to work is how opening and ending songs were made to work. Setting the atmosphere or tone for the scene, evoking emotions to make the viewer empathize with the scene, or to affect the children’s behaviors or reactions. Using the popular Disney Princess songs from each movie, for example, can also make the film more memorable for the kids, as some remember catchy songs better when learning. Why else would elementary and preschool teachers often use them?
Trolls World Tour
Before discussing the songs in the sequel, Trolls Band Together, let’s understand how they used musical numbers in the second movie, first by introducing different species of Trolls based on their types of music. In the second movie, there are techno Trolls, pop-singing Trolls (Which Poppy and Branch are a part of), and even some specific K-pop singing Trolls who also dance. The queen of the hard rock Trolls wants to wipe out the other six tribes of musical Trolls and make it to where only hard rock music exists.
This is a child-friendly depiction of genocide with the queen’s intention of wiping out the other tribes so that only hers can exist, but it ends with a happy ending and resolve, of course. Aside from that detail, the film revolves around how the six main musical tribes revolve around these six strings that help give the Trolls their musical abilities. Throughout the film, music is used in different ways: hard rock is used as hypnosis to create zombies, and differing music genres are weaponized to battle or perform against each other.
The six strings eventually get destroyed, causing the Trolls to lose the colors to their respective music types and musical gifts. They are then rejuvenated when motivated to sing or dance and realize their true musical talents, not the strings, were made by each of them.
Trolls Band Together
Trolls World Tour is far different from how Trolls Band Together played out by showing how the music for Trolls isn’t just a magical power but also a life force when forcefully taken. The two new villains see this of the franchise: a pair of twins who are idols, but in reality, they have no idol-worthy talent. It is shown that they have been stealing music skills from a Troll, which they keep in a crystal perfume bottle designed to suck away and spray that talent onto the twins. Despite their villainous role, the audience favors the twins.
There is one song frequently sung in Trolls Band Together, where the twin villains tend to repeat the same couple of varying lyrics when singing, but the scenes and the vocals are done so well that each scene is enjoyable to listen to every time despite the repeats. Trolls Band Together doesn’t have as many musical numbers, and there are few scenes where music is weaponized. That is, if you don’t count the twins using their stolen talents to dazzle their fans while trying to cover up the Trolls trying to save Branch’s brother from their grasp.
The epic musical battle happens near the end when the brother almost dies after having so much musical talent sucked out of him. The rest of Branch’s brothers motivate him to get back up again for one more song, and eventually, all that harmonizing revitalizes his life force. Trolls Band Together isn’t as epic as the previous two movies, as the story mostly revolves around a rescue mission and family drama. Still it contains meaningful lessons about family, the fallout between Branch and his brothers, and comparing them to the twins.
Conclusion
Trolls Band Together uses the music theme of boy bands having a fallout, idols, and the use of an old classic song that never dies. But you wouldn’t understand unless you see the use of the lyrics in the movie. It shows lessons on different dynamics, working together, other species of characters, and a baby driving a large car. There is a lot that goes on in the film and a lot that goes on in the others, too, so if you’re new, try watching the previous two first. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. Trolls Band Together can still be enjoyed without viewing the others.
