Trigun fans we have some good news. The much-awaited sequel to the remake/reimagining of the classic sci-fi space Western Trigun (1998), is on the horizon. News is breaking that the sequel to 2023’s Trigun Stampede is coming… soon. Whilst there is no sound of an exact release date, Trigun Stargaze as the forthcoming anime is known, will see the continuation of the story that began (or began again) in Stampede.
No doubt fans of the manga and anime are waiting for the release dates, reveal of plot points etc. But this is good news that fans of the franchise will savor. More Trigun that builds on the groundwork laid by the 2023 release, and hopefully adds a bit more depth to the world and characters. And the info coming in all appears positive.
What to Expect from Trigun Stargaze?
The first thing to note is that artwork featured on the official X (Twitter) Trigun Stampede page showcases the main cast including Vash, Wolfwood and a certain villain. The drawings carry a darker tone to the ones seen in the first season. Could this mean something? Also, there is a short clip of the new season’s official logo, which for the fans of the original, appears to serve as a reminder of the 1998 classic. In terms of characters, fan favourite Milly Thompson, who was sadly missed in the first season, will be making a return.
Whilst it is early to read too much into what course the new season will take, there are a few things fans of anime can be certain of. One: great animation; two: likeable characters with complex motivations; terrible villains and big stakes. Whilst it is too early to say if the developers at Studio Orange and series creator Yasuhiro Nightow are planning to conclude the story and intend to go off with a bang, reports indicate that Trigun Stargaze is shaping up to be a conclusion of sorts to the story that began with Stampede (2023).
Ending the Story or the Start of Something New
Image Captured by Damian TharThe original Trigun (1998) ran for 26 episodes and told a relatively complex story of an interesting hero with a dark past, and unfolding horror resulting from the machinations of the main antagonist Millions Knives. Trigun Stampede (2023) sought to do something different whilst remaining faithful to the core elements of the story, it sought to affirm the sci-fi aspects of the story and allow the conflict between Vash and Knives to play out more clearly.
Whilst the ending of Trigun Stampede appeared to provide closure to the great conflict between the brothers, a lot of questions were left unanswered. The most notable: Is Millions Knives really gone? The interesting thing about Trigun Stampede is that as a reimagining, it also served as a part-prequel to the original, thus laying the groundwork for the old story to be reworked anew. A prospect, fans of the original anime might be dreading and desiring at the same time.
When Will the Sequel Air?
All signs indicate that we may be looking at an early 2025 release for Trigun Stargaze. Most likely in January 2025. This is understandable, since we have passed the halfway mark of 2024, and its predecessor premiered in January 2023. Another unknown is the exact duration of the forthcoming show. The 12-episode run of Stampede whilst good was not nearly enough, so fans must hope for a longer story treatment. Fingers crossed.
