Dreamworks Plans For The Wild Robot Sequel

The Wild Robot

After making $100M, The Wild Robot’s director, Chris Sanders, confirmed that a sequel is in the works. From its stellar cast to the gorgeous animations, The Wild Robot has gotten plenty of praise. The film’s success is similar to what was seen with How to Train Your Dragon. Demand has always been high, and DreamWorks seems to have pushed themselves to follow its path.

With the popularity of the original, The Wild Robot has officially become DreamWorks’ next franchise. After the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, Dreamworks was searching for another to take its place. Now, The Wild Robot is the best option to take this mantle.

How To Train Your Dragon Parallels

The most prominent similarity the two films share is that they were both directed by Chris Sanders. Both films feature the main character losing a leg at some point. Both also have a core theme of survival, although it occurs in different circumstances. These two movies certainly have their differences, but are also similar enough to resonate with both audiences.

The Wild Robot Synopsis

The Wild Robot tells the tale of a newly manufactured robot named Roz. After her ship sinks during a hurricane, she becomes a castaway on an uninhabited island. Roz became the sole survivor of her robot line. Some curious otters accidentally activate her and finds nobody there to give her orders.

After several days, Roz attempts to contact to her makers. However, she is struck by lightning and attacked by a horde of raccoons plus a bear. While fleeing, she accidentally crushes a goose nest, leaving only a single surviving egg. After defending the egg from a fox named Fink, it hatches. Then, the goose breaks Roz’s communication equipment.

Roz and company eventually find a Universal Dynamics greenhouse, where hostile robots attack them. Eventually, Roz and the animals find shelter and start rescuing animals from across the island. This forces Roz to use up most of her battery and power off. Before she powers down, Roz and Fink convince the animals to stop fighting at least until spring.

She wakes up several months later to discover that the animals are still cooperating with each other. Then, a Universal Dynamics dropship complete with retrieval robot, arrived to recover Roz. Although they defeated the retrieval bot, Roz decides to go back to protect her friends.

Sequel Details and Speculation

Since the original film was based on a book, The Wild Robot already has a sequel framework. The Wild Robot Escapes, the second book in Peter Brown’s trilogy provides an excellent starting framework. The film’s director revealed a sequel is in the works at Deadline Contenders’ session on October 12th. “100% yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one.”

While Dreamworks has yet to reveal precise details, the book gives us some hints. While some changes are expected, the novel tells us enough to make some guesses. One thing we know is that the sequel concerns Roz trying to get back to the island. In this story, the island is more of a distant goal rather than the setting.

The story also does not feature as much of a returning cast as you might assume for a sequel. Roz and Brightbill make a return, but the others only have a brief cameo at the end. Of course, Dreamworks could elect to make changes to the plot of the source material. It’s entirely possible that they will decide not to do a one-to-one recreation of the novel’s plot. They could decide to use it as a framework rather than a script.

Final Thoughts

There’s no replacing How to Train Your Dragon,  but The Wild Robot still resonates with audiences. The audience already has a connection with the movie’s characters. People are eager to follow their story and see where it goes from here. If they want to achieve the same success again, then The Wild Robot is the ideal choice. Not only do the characters resonate, but the parallels will also help draw in new fans. If they expand the story organically, then The Wild Robot may wind up as DreamWorks’ next hit.
