In Burbank, California, lies the Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the birthplace of countless iconic cartoon series. Shows like Rugrats, Catdog, Invader Zim, and El Tigre have cemented their places in history. However, one Nickelodeon cartoon outlived them into the modern age: Spongebob Squarepants. The program follows the escapades of a silly sea sponge working at a local restaurant. There have been many zany stories, including the early Halloween episode.
The Story of Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants originated from an educational comic by marine biologist/animator Stephen Hillenburg. Titled The Intertidal Zone, Hillenburg used it when teaching at the Orange County Marine Institute. Rocko’s Modern Life show writer Martin Olson read the book once and was impressed. He suggested Hillenburg pitch the idea for a show to Nickelodeon, which he did. The studio’s executives liked his proposal and approved its production. Then, in the summer of 1999, the show’s pilot aired on the network.
Spongebob Squarepants follows the antics of the titular character, a yellow sponge with box-shaped shorts. He lives in a pineapple in the fictional undersea city of Bikini Bottom. His best friend Patrick, stuffy neighbor Squidward, and boss Mr. Krabs often join his escapades. The show doesn’t have an overarching story, making the episodes self-contained one-shots. Very rarely do any changes carry over to future segments. Nevertheless, Spongebob and his friends have brought much joy and laughter to their fans.
Scaredy Pants, A Spooky Underwater Halloween
The early Spongebob Squarepants episode Scaredy Pants serves as the Halloween special. In the feature, Mr. Krabs invites Spongebob to listen to a ghost story. He tells the tale of the Flying Dutchman, a ghost pirate who steals souls. After a quick scare from Squidward, Spongebob vows to no longer be afraid on Halloween. Patrick arrives at Spongebob’s pineapple and helps him pick out a costume. The sponge picks out a sheet and wooden clogs, claiming to be the Flying Dutchman.
Spongebob fails to scare some trick-or-treaters but deduces it’s due to his comical square shape. After Patrick shaves him to make him round, the friends prank Mr. Krabs’ Halloween party. It works, but a mishap exposes Spongebob before the actual Flying Dutchman appears. He removes the sponge’s costume but flees in terror, followed by everyone else. It turns out Patrick accidentally shaved Spongebob down to his brain. Because of this, the sponge achieved its goal of being scary on Halloween.
The Scare Factor of Scaredy Pants
Scaredy Pants is more fun rather than nightmare-inducing since the show is for children. Despite this, there is a scare factor since it’s a Halloween-centric episode. The most prominent scare is the most feared ghost in the ocean, the Flying Dutchman. Upon appearing, there is thunder, lightning, a foghorn, and an eerie green fog. Add his evil laugh and blank eyes, and it’s the ideal scare for younger viewers.
Another significant scare factor in Scaredy Pants is its mild use of body horror. First, Spongebob insists Patrick shave his head into a rounded shape for his ghost costume. The starfish cuts off pieces of his friend’s head with an electric shaver. Despite the disturbing implication, it’s not scary because he’s more of a kitchen sponge. The most horrific example is at the end with Spongebob’s completely exposed brain. Organs are always an unsettling sight, no matter who is watching.
Final Thoughts
Scaredy Pants is a fantastic episode from Nickelodeon’s golden age. While only slightly scary and disturbing, it has oodles of Spongebob fun and Halloween spirit. It even has the honor of introducing the recurring character, The Flying Dutchman. Scaredy Pants may be for the spooky season, but it’s a year-round treat. There’s nothing like diving into classic Spongebob at any time or day.
