Piece by Piece Pharrell Williams

Pharrell William’s documentary and musical, ‘Piece by Piece‘, a journey about his life and career, will be shown completely in LEGO. Focus Features has already helped to release the film in theaters on October 11th, 2024, and the film is still only available in US theaters. The plans and dates to release Piece by Piece internationally have already begun. Its first international premiere has been made at the Toronto International Film Festival, and soon fans in the UK will also be able to see the film.

Pharrell Williams

Born on April 5th, 1973, in Virginia Beach, he is a music artist, producer, writer, composer, and actor, known for his wide-brimmed hat and iconic music video, “Happy”. Pharrell Williams is a beloved celebrity with a family, an eye for quality in music and films, and a gift for seeing sound through vibrant colors.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk-of-Fame, a clothing line called Billionaire Boys Club, a jewelry line through Louis Vuitton called Blason with Camille Miceli and multiple Grammy awards. Piece By Piece can now be added to the list of incredible achievements and creations he has made, for it is as unique as he is and suits his creativity with humor, exploring his feelings throughout his story.

Why LEGO?

Pharrell Williams disliked hearing his own voice recordings and seeing himself in film. This made it difficult when debating the idea of documenting his origin story. Williams was especially reluctant to be a producer himself and knew he would have issues with the details. His agent finally got him to agree after emphasizing that Williams could have the film made however he wanted, including animation. That was the first step in making Piece by Piece, which started in 2019. His choice in creating the film is because he wanted his synesthesia to be seen.

LEGO has had experience in the film industry before, starting with The LEGO Movie. That decision soon escalated to creating a LEGO Spider-Man scene for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023, thanks to the help of a talented 14-year-old animator. LEGO had been wanting to get back into filmmaking after having not made any animations for a couple of years, and a documentary on someone’s life was something completely new. They chose to help document Williams’ life, and they worked passionately for five years to get everything right.

A Fantastic Reimagining

The bricks allowed the filmmakers to express William’s synesthesia creatively through the translucent pieces traditionally used to act as light in other builds. They created new parts to make sure every part of the movie was made with LEGO and refashioned existing parts for new purposes.

The main issue they had was censoring the rated R elements in Williams’ origin story and music videos. Character figures had to be altered to fit the PG rating. Piece by Piece director Morgan Neville substituted a scene with Williams and Snoop Dogg being in a room with marijuana joints. They were replaced with a fog spray can. They created different perspective scenes where characters were breaking the fourth wall or creating metaphors for reactions.

During scenes where William is producing a song, the creative team added visual effects along with the stop-motion. This includes texts that fly in the background, animation of swirls, or effects on the faces. Practical effects like swapping mini-figures for various sizes. The only time LEGOs were not used was during a 2D animation scene or fog. They did extremely well with the character designs, especially hairstyles for the African American characters. There weren’t LEGO hairstyles for those hair types before.
