Marvel Comics is no stranger to alternate scenarios, and My Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man explores one. It takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and centers around Peter Parker. Naturally, due to it being a different reality, there will be changed key factors and new characters. In addition, important events will differ, thus, it will certainly be a wild ride for anyone who watches it.
Spider-Man’s Marvel Cinematic Canon Origins
My Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man branches from the source material of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the aforementioned reality, Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man and lives similarly to other incarnations. He is raised by his aunt and goes through life while moonlighting as a superhero. One key difference is he is under the tutelage of Tony Stark. He is also assisted by his best friend Ned Leeds and his girlfriend Michelle Jones-Watson.
During his adventures, Peter Parker faces off against nefarious villains such as Vulture and Mysterio. He eventually becomes an official member of the Avengers and faces off against Thanos. The web-slinging superhero even partook in the war against the Mad Titan’s army. His most recent venture had him team up with two other incarnations of himself. In the end, he is forced to make a great sacrifice but perseveres. And with the new series coming, the MCU is not through with this web-slinger.
A Twist to Parker’s Tale
Produced by Marvel Studios Animation, My Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will retell Parker’s story. It will also explore Spider-Man’s early days as a web-slinging superhero. One crucial change will come in his choice of mentor. Instead of Tony Stark, Peter will be mentored by Norman Osborn. Another major change will be the origin of the spider that bites Peter. It will emerge from a magical portal instead of a science lab like most universes.
The young Spider-Man meets a variety of characters not featured in the canon MCU. This roster will include Otto Octavius, Chameleon, Rhino, Harry Osborn, and Lonnie Lincoln. Of course, there will be characters from the previously mentioned source reality. This includes Matt Murdock, Mac Gargan, Peter’s aunt May, and Dr. Stephen Strange. Tony Stark will appear in the series though his role is currently unknown. There is also still no word about Ned Leeds or MJ Watson.
Clothes Make the Spider-man
My Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will change the origin of Peter’s famous suit. In the MCU, the young web-slinger received his outfit from Tony Stark. The same goes for his powerful ‘Iron Spider’ nanosuit that debuted in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He eventually gets his iconic red-and-blue suit at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The final one is more likely homemade due to his circumstances at that point.
In this alternate reality, it’s possible Peter will get his superhero outfit from Norman Osborn. Likely because Norman makes it at his company, Oscorp, which is a multibillion-dollar multinational corporation. However, the young web-slinger will not have only one suit. He will supposedly have a yellow suit and a white and blue Oscorp suit. He will also have a “beetle” suit and a dark suit. These outfits will mean that Peter will have a larger arsenal than in the MCU.
The Man Behind the Spider-man
Norman Osborn will take on the role of Peter’s mentor. This is quite the switch because Norman is usually one of his greatest foes. Norman Osborn usually becomes the Green Goblin, the maniacal high-flying fiend armed with explosives. He and the web-slinger have clashed in multiple realities in various forms. There are even times when Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend, takes up the mantle.
It is unknown if the Norman of My Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will do the same. There is currently no Green Goblin in the MCU so its spot is open. Whether it happens or not is anyone’s guess, there’s only one way to find out. Until then, Norman will remain Peter’s mentor and guide him on his journey. He will be Spider-Man’s “man in the chair,” Ned’s role in the MCU. Audiences everywhere will get to witness these changes on November 2, 2024 on Disney+.
