Pixar has created many memorable films, including the ever-popular Monsters, Inc. from 2001. This movie starred two monsters, Mike and Sully, working at their city’s largest power company. In 2013, the prequel Monsters University premiered, giving fans a glimpse into their initial meeting. The pair go to school and work together to become top scarers on campus. However, they become trapped in the human world and perform a near-impossible scare to escape.
It All Started With Monsters, Inc.
Before Monsters University, there was Monsters, Inc., which starred John Goodman and Billy Crystal. James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski are a pair of monster best friends. They are also co-workers at the most prominent power plant in the city, Monsters, Inc. Their job is to travel through children’s closets, scare the kids, and harness their screams. Sulley is the company’s best scarer, and Mike is his assistant and coach. And their hard work is much needed due to the city experiencing an energy crisis.
Mike and Sulley’s lives become chaotic when they meet a young human girl. Later nicknamed Boo, she wanders into their world, and the duo must return her home. Boo’s assigned monster, Randall Boggs, learns they have her and agrees to help them. However, he double-crosses them because he, in truth, needs her for an experiment. Randall has constructed a machine capable of extracting screams from its victims. And Henry J. Waternoose III, CEO of Monsters, Inc., is his partner.
Recapping The Events of Monsters University
Set years before Monsters, Inc., Monsters University follows Mike and Sulley through their college days. Mike portrays the hard-working, book-smart student, while Sulley is the talented yet arrogant slacker. They attend the titular school, hoping to become scarers, but are not friends. They become rivals after Sulley joins the best fraternity on campus. Their rivalry eventually goes too far, getting them expelled from the school’s scaring program.
Monsters University begins holding its annual Scare Games, where the winners are declared the best. Mike enters with the school’s loser frat, Oozma Kappa, to prove himself. The dean even agrees to let him and his team back into the scaring program. However, they must win the entire competition, or else Mike leaves the school. Seeing it as a chance to rejoin the program, Sulley joins the Oozma Kappa team.
Escaping the Human World
Monsters University is full of memorable moments, including the escape scene. The scene takes place after Oozma Kappa wins the Scare Games because of Mike. Immediately afterward, Mike discovers that the equipment was tampered with. He confronts Sulley, who later confesses that Mike never will be scary. Angry, Mike enters the human world to prove Sulley and everyone else wrong.
Mike arrives at a summer camp and tries to scare the kids. However, the kids find him cute and funny instead of scary. Sulley goes after him, but they discover the portal home has been closed. Mike gets the idea to generate enough energy by scaring the humans pursuing them. By employing some intriguing tactics, they succeed and safely return home.
Why Sulley Was So Scary
The escape scene in Monsters University had a unique horror factor, contrasting the entire movie. Mike and Sulley perform a large-scale scare to create the scream energy needed to escape. The only catch is the humans they need to terrify are adults. However, terrifying them will be more challenging than scaring a single child. Mike knows this and concocts a plan that utilizes typical horror movie techniques. These tactics include moving objects, creepy dolls, and mysterious sounds before Sulley roars at them.
What made Sulley so scary in the escape scene was the buildup provided by Mike. Instead of having Sulley immediately roar, Mike performed a series of minuscule scares prior. Each one heightens the next until Sulley uses his signature roar to finish things. However, what might have been a factor is the adults themselves. They likely feared for their lives upon seeing Sulley, thinking they were about to die. Death is a common fear for adults, though imminent death is one worth screaming over.
Final Thoughts
Monsters University and the escape scene near the end are both fantastic. Watching Mike and Sulley become a team and cooperate is a real treat. And the slightly more mature scare tactics were a unique addition to the kid-friendly film. Monsters University is a delightful movie for all ages and is a perfect Halloween film.
