Monster High: Mattel’s Creepy Gorgeous Fashionistas

Monster High 2010 Nickelodeon Series

Mattel, located in El Segundo, California, is one of the world’s dominant toy companies. The corporation is most famous for two iconic brands: Barbie and Hot Wheels. Other plaything lines have been produced by it, including the peculiar and unique Monster High. The brand focuses on dolls based on typical monsters like vampires, werewolves, and zombies. Eventually, it expanded beyond toys into online cartoons, movies, and animated series.

Exploring the History of Monster High

Created by Garrett and Darren Sander, Monster High began in 2007. The brothers gained inspiration from shopping trips with tween girls to understand their fashion tastes. They noticed their research subjects gravitated towards gothic fashion, such as black clothing and skulls. The Sander brothers chose to take their new doll line in that direction. They used their love for classic horror films to shape the toys during conceptualization. And it wasn’t long until the prototypes were created and group-tested.

The first generation of Monster High dolls launched in 2010 and became instantly successful. They were the second best-selling doll brand, right behind the ever-popular Barbie. The figures were sometimes scarce due to being in high demand. Unfortunately, much controversy arose because of the dolls’ unrealistic body proportions and skirt lengths. Kids still admired the toys, and they eventually resonated with adults. The brand’s popularity soon led to the dolls gaining backstories, webisodes, and series.

Monster High Shows Throughout the Generations

The first generation of Monster High media was a web series from 2010 to 2015. Season One introduced the primary characters and their personalities and roles in the show. It didn’t have an overarching plot, though that changed for the second installment. Most of the protagonists formed a cheerleading squad and worked to participate in a competition. Later seasons reused the procedure set by the first while introducing new characters. Some movies vaguely affected the show by expanding the show’s world and lore.

From 2016 to 2018, the second generation of Monster High aired. It was a short-lived run with only two movies and one series. It reimagined some characters and reworked the overall premise, giving it an origin story vibe. Starting with a live-action film, Generation Three premiered in 2022 and continues to this day. It is the first era to have an animated television series and no web series.

The Strange Appeal of the Shows

Like the dolls, the characters are the main appeal of the Monster High shows. The overall idea was they were the offspring of famous horror creatures or generic monsters. For example, Frankie Stein is the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride. Clawdeen Wolf is a werewolf but possesses no connections to the iconic Wolf Man. In every generation, the premise of the shows is the characters attend school in various situations. They typically have slice-of-life adventures ranging from crushing on another student to saving the school.

The Monster High characters often elevate the stories with their unique monster traits and personalities. Frankie has a habit of falling apart due to having a stitched-up body. And Draculaura is a vegetarian despite being the daughter of the legendary Count Dracula. However, the oddest thing about them is they are surprisingly relatable. They behave no differently than the typical high school student and have the same problems. Their being so human is the most appealing oddity in any generation.

Final Thoughts

The Monster High shows are always fun, no matter the generation. The characters are colorful, the stories are relatable, and the world is Halloween-themed. What started as a simple doll line evolved into something more. And it will be interesting to see what happens to Monster High next.
