Bob’s Burgers is a fantastic show produced by Fox in New York City, New York. It’s a hilarious semi-musical animated series boasting a talented cast of actors. Jay James Johnston has been a prominent cast member since the first season. He voiced Jimmy Pesto, the titular character’s business rival from across the street. However, Johnston got into trouble years ago and is paying the price for his actions.
The Cast of Bob’s Burgers
Created by Loren Bouchard, Bob’s Burgers debuted in January 2011. The series follows Bob Belcher, who runs a small burger joint in a seaside town. He works alongside his wife Linda and three kids, Tina, Gene, and Louise. Most episodes involve the Belcher family struggling to make the restaurant a success. Other times, the program showcases the three siblings’ childhood and growing up.
Bob’s Burgers has received critical acclaim during its run, becoming a 2014 Emmy winner. A good portion of that success comes from the work of its voice actors. Taking the titular role of Bob is the multi-talented comedian and actor H. Jon Benjamin. Alongside him is John Roberts as Bob’s wife Linda, basing her off his mother. Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal portray Tina, Gene, and Louise, respectively. And until 2021, the cast included Jay James Johnston as Jimmy Pesto.
Don’t Eat at Jimmy Pesto’s
Brought to life initially by Jay James Johnston, Jimmy Pesto acts as Bob’s main antagonist. Jimmy owns a pizza restaurant across from the titular burger joint called Jimmy Pesto’s Pizzeria. It’s unclear when he and Bob became rivals, but their hostility existed since the start. Jimmy is the foil of Bob, being a success while Bob and his family struggle. The twist is the food at Pesto’s pizzeria is subpar at best or downright disgusting. His customers seem to come for the bar and the captivating atmosphere.
Jimmy Pesto is not only Bob’s primary business competitor but also his overall bully. He seems to have the maturity of a high schooler, antagonizing Bob at every opportunity. Some of it appears to be out of pettiness or boredom. Viewers either hate or love his antics, thanks to the acting of Jay James Johnston. He portrayed Pesto until December 2021, and the versatile Eric Bauza replaced him. The change came from Johnston participating in a disgraceful act.
Jay James Johnston Facing Consequences
Jay James Johnston took part in the attempted coup of the U.S. government. He and countless other supporters of Donald Trump stormed the United States Capitol Building. This action came about after Trump lost the 2020 election to President Biden. Cartoon Brew says Johnston utilized a stolen riot shield to push against the line of authorities. Upon discovering his actions, the higher-ups of Bob’s Burgers discreetly removed him. Authorities arrested Johnston on June 7, 2023, and a trial commenced on July 15, 2024.
Jay James Johnston maintained a conviction of innocence until pleading guilty on July 8, 2024. He received a felony charge for obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder. Johnston received a sentence of 12 months and one day in prison. In addition, he must adhere to two years of supervised release. He also must pay $2000 in restitution to the Architect of the Capitol.
Final Thoughts
Bob’s Burgers is a fantastic show, and Jimmy Pesto is a delightful antagonist. Sadly, Jay James Johnston will no longer have anything to do with his well-known role. His actions have cost him a voice-acting job and a few years of freedom. Whether or not he can bounce back from this is yet to be known. Either way, Bob’s Burgers can viewed on streaming services like Hulu, Disney+, and Apple TV.
